Hey all
At a thrift store not far from my house they have 2 med. sized candle stick holders that are marked sterling reinforced weighted and they were 49.99 but that have a white tag and now they are half price..
I would say they are well over a pound and do you all think its a buy? if so how hard would it be to get the weighted caca out of them? I did get a weighted pewter candlestick holder and it was kind of easy to get the caca out.
I would say they are about 5 inches tall and are kind of wide.
what would you think the silver to caca ratio be?
:headbang:
Thanks

Are the candlesticks damaged? If not they may be worth more than the silver content.

Removing the silver is cake. I scrapped one candlestick like the one your talking about. I believe I got .7 or .8 ounces (Not troy)out of it. So you would end up with under 2 oz if I remember correctly.

Personally try to get some discout coupons through donating something if possible ( Which I always try to do ) and then buy them.

If I couldn't get a discount, I would still probably buy them.

weighted candlestick are a waste of time unless you get them very cheap.. there will be less then 1 ounce of silver for both together most of the time... what you want to do is see if there is a markers mark on them... that is the only way you might turn a dollar without losing you azz..

3 candle holder with AG covered copper wire spreaders = 2oz troy
2 candle holder with silver tube spreaders = 1.5oz troy

If you've never taken weighted sterling candlesticks apart, it's hard to imagine from holding them just how thin the sterling cover is. So, here's some pictures . . . Everything is at high magnification macro. My thumb nail is more or less the same size as yours. That's one scale. The tubular arms with copper and plaster under the silver skin are thinner than a bic pen. You could almost paint the plaster base silver and it would look the same as before I took the sterling skin off of it.

Last weighted silver purchase:

paid $100.00
sold $320.00

Time well wasted :)

I am currently working on my next pile.
Yes Time wasted!!!!!!!! either 2 thing happened with you either you bought a bulk of stuff for a hundred or you have dumb luck.. I been wheeling an dealing sterling long enough to know a 25.00 candle stick holders are not worth my time or ivestment ..Period How many peice did you have to cut apart to get 320.00? I can guess about 10-12 peices.. so you was spending 10.00 each set or less.. on average

Got three for $3 and ended up with 108 grams...about 35 grams each, or $35 in silver

how do you figure it's 35.00 in silver? the spot price for silver is for 999 fine pure silver sterling is 92.5% pure . price for 35 grams is more like 28.81 with spot being 30.75 ozt

(35/28.34) * .925 * 30.75 = $35.12, how are you calculating?

My best friend picked up a pair of weighted CS's.

When silver was at $26, the scrap content was about $14.

I'll say this again You WILL NOT get full spot for Sterling Silver.... you take atleast 10% off of spot price for sterling silver 30.75 x10%=3.075 ,30.75-3.075 = 27.675. So my scrap metal calculator I used last night was over paying by 1.135 if they was going to pay me 28.81

When I first started buying sterling to resell I kept records of how much silver I get out of weighted items. I haven't fooled with any of the taller more elaborate candle holders but have taken apart lots of the short, single candle type. In my experience there are 2 basic sizes. The large ones are about 3" tall & have a 3.5" diameter base. The small ones are also about 3" tall but have a 2.75" base. I generally get .5ozt from small ones and 1ozt from the large ones. Here's a couple sets from my notes:

Gorham Candlestick pr. 3 1/2" base diameter, 3" tall 3.5 troy ounce sterling
Rogers Candlesticks pr. 3 1/2" dia., 3" tall 2.25 troy ounce
Pair Candlesticks 3.5" base dia, 3" tall 2 troy ounce

I got the same amount out of the pair I bought. Still have it sitting in a large sterling scrap pile. Hoping silver gets to $35 and then sending it in.

What is the approximate value of pewter scrap?? This is a new one for me. It contains tin?

Yeah, I know sterling is not pure. I also know that I'm not gonna get the spot for the silver in it. I found my error was using avoirdupois conversion factor instead of troy ounces. In which case (35/31.1) * .925 * (30.75)= $32.01. When the refiner's fee is taken into account (10%), it is $28.81, which is what you said in your last post. Your $1.135 difference appears to come from the fact that 35gm>1 oz. (1.125 gms more to be exact). 1.125 gms sterling is worth about 1.03, which appears to be the difference between your last post and this post. Sorry about the confusion.

I actually used a real calculater an not the online conversion calculater on my last post.. but thanks for clearing that up.. I guess now you see that it is 28.81 a ozt?

yeah, it was just an error in conversion of gm to oz.
