I have a question about having metal in your body. I had an incident with a 4 wheeler 1.5 years ago and after 20 surgeries I will hopefully be walking again in a few months. I now have a titanium rod that runs from my knee to my foot along with 3 screws. Will this cause too much frustration to continue detecting? I thought about just saying to heck with it and selling my Surf PI Pro this year but I have decided to wait and give it a whirl. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

My father just had a titanium rods placed down the center of his leg bone in each leg on Christmas Eve. I can't give any end results yet, as he's back at home now for his recovery process and learning how to walk again. I believe it's the same as yours though. It runs the full length of his leg, from knee to ankle. They said he'll be able to do normal things like run and be active once he fully recovers. So hopefully you'll be able to do the same as well!!

Mine runs through the middle of my leg bone as well. My concern is that my MD will go ape @&$% when I get it anywhere near my left leg.

Dude that is one serious break! Best of luck with the MDing. I'd just be happy to be walking again.

I have a plate and 4 screws in the ball of my foot and I don't think it ever gave me any concern. However I ain't hauling half a car around in my leg like you are. I would think you would be all right. All you can do is get back on your feet and give it a shot. Happy hunting.

Way to beat the possible problem is to snorkel and/or dive.
Go for it.

you should see my leg lol its close to yours but more. I think my md goes funny when its near it. My left also but I just swing to the right and stay away from it. there is always a way to do what you like to do. I hope you heal right and dont end up like me with a broke leg for 4 years. I wish you well and good luck in mding go out and find the big one.

Man that is a bad break, I have a surf PI and if my scoop gets near it it goes off because they are so sensitive, swinging it to one side away from the bad leg might work, I wish you luck and really hope you can continue M'Dnnn.

Actually, the break you see in the picture was done by the doctor. My accident cut my foot off including four inches of my leg. The break in the picture was created to lengthen my leg. As you can see i no longer have an ankle but i am very happy to still have a leg. I would post a pic from just after my accident but probably a bit to gory for the forum. Thanks for the insight and I guess I will just need to wait and see what happens. I am probably getting ahead of myself anyway....I should probably worry about walking first.

Sorry for your misfortune. That's a pretty graphic picture! Have you thought of trying a longer lower rod extension for your detector to reach out further away from you? Could work if there is a problem being to close to you leg. Good luck to you. I hope all goes well!!

The more I've thought about this, there more I'm INSPIRED by you. You are not sitting around looking for sympathy. Or looking for somebody to pay for the rest of your life.

You are looking for ways to ENJOY LIFE and your hobby!

I'm willing to bet, if you contacted the manufacturer of your metal detector and told them your story, they may work with you to help modify your surf pro. Make sure you get a hold of their Public Relations dept.

Again, Best of Luck! And I sincerely hope you can again join us out on the beaches and in fields and woods!

Thank You for your inspiration!

Piercesdad, thanks for the kind words. Modifying the detector is a good thought. I think I will probably wait and see how things go when I am walking and then maybe look into that option if it does not work out. I really appreciate everyone's feedback.

I have never ran a detector over titanium so I have no idea what it would ring up but I would think you could disc it out. I don't know what else you would be missing out on though. Take care, I hope you have a speedy recovery. HH Charlie

I wouldn't. I would put that surf Pro on the other side of the room and used it as a goal to learn to walk again. Go for it Man!

sharkbait , ive had a full knee replacement , not as much
metal as you have but i have to lift the detector up
pretty close to get a sygnal. i work in the water & you will be able to.
stick with it , its too good a hobby to give it away .
best of luck , slak jak.

I hope you manage a full recovery and are able to hunt again. I have found titanium with my excal, so I know it will be picked up with a PI. No way to disc out anything really. I think you could get into a swing/walk pattern that keeps your foot away from the coil. I have noticed myself develop a walking pattern where I take 1 step for each sweep of the coil to one side. I am sure if you practice, you can find a step/sweep pattern that works and keeps your leg away.

Heres to your full recovery! :occasion18: :occasion14:

If your concerned about the coil being too close to you, just extend the length of it so that its further away from your body, it shouldnt be a problem. Anyways, I realy hope you dont give up on this great hobby. I actually owe a great deal of credit to metal detecting for my own personal recovery because it got me outside and using my legs and getting the muscle memory working again and stuff like that. Back in May of 2006 at work I free fell 60 feet off a roof, compound fractured both femures and pancaked my right heal. Both of my femurs looked like your fracture, shatered and major gaps between the bones. So I spent a year in the wheelchair and because of this I lost all my muscles due to atrophy, so my doctor finally says,"lets get you weight bearing and see what happens" even though he could see only a little bone growth in both femures. So im walking around using a walker for the longest time.More bone growth is showing on the x-rays so now im using crutches and at this time im slowly starting to get back into detecting even though im using crutches.Even though I cant go to all these places id like to detect at like up a mountain or off into the woods I can still detect slowly at school yards etc...so as time passes on my mobility is getting better but still cant walk up the slightest incline like a wheelchair ramp for example. SO now ive progresed to a cane and my mobility is getting better and I found that even though ive did tons of physio in the gym that some of the best physio is just getting and doing walking out no matter how slow or awlkward it is because it will get better over time, it just takes time.So its been 2 3/4 years since my accident and im still getting better but I still cant run or jump but Im now detecting in all the places that I was going to before I fell off the roof, im going into the woods and up mountains etc...So I just want to say no matter how frustrating it can get at times with the pain or your lack of mobility just never give up and stay persistent and alow your body to get better slowly because a full recovery will not happen over night. I wish you all the best.
