Found this in a backyard today. All sorts of different things turned up, but this was the weirdest.

The material is definitely brass and no part of it is especially sharp. The house dates back to the 1750's, but I get the sense that this is newer since the threads look very regular and neat. It reminds me a bit of a logging pike, but those seem to be much larger. Anyone seen one of these before?

possibly the sliding jaw of an old adjustable wrench (?)

brass for gas lines/pipes

I would think the threads are too fine and in the wrong place for a jaw to an adjustable wrench.

Yeah; also none of the sides are flat/textured so it wouldn't be able to grip anything without stabbing into it. It looks like it was meant to be screwed and unscrewed as it wore out or was lost.

Jaw from a "monkey wrench." I was wrong about the monkey wrench. A monkey wrench was for use on square nuts so the jaw would have a flat surface.

Those are all pipe wrenches, which have teeth on their jaws. I'm beginning to think it not a wrench at all?

Probably not, all sides and edges are rounded which would make gripping something tough. Here are some more profile shots if that helps.

If the points were ever sharp, it looks kinda like a spike for a log dog from a sawmill.

IMO, most likely ornamental. Unless it's used for an anti-explosive environment, it's not a tool. Brass just won't hold up to that kind of use. Looking at the way it's made, it may be one of several that were arranged in a circle with the barb facing outward. Curious item.
