After 6 years 2 firsts in a day is a good hunt.

A group hunt of 3 (thanks D + T) to 3 different locations.

I know for sure I have found 200 spoons / forks, but never a "real" Silver. I even found them with hall marks and everything, but only fakes (heavy plate) Today was different, got a bent up butter knife I didn't think much of it as I have found many, and never a "real" one. Anyway after careful examination, I can see no copper on this one anywhere, even on the edge. I'm still skeptical so after home so I scrapped it with a knife on the edge trying to expose the copper core, it isn't there. This is the first for me Silver Cutlery. There are marks / letters on it I don't recognize, but it is Silver @ 17 plus grams. Like 85 cents silver coin.

Then on to another site, I got a couple of good pocket spills, 2 dollars in one hole, and 5 dollars in another. I guess you can't help but like the crappy Can. coins for that.

I think the best find of the day, for me, is the tiny whistle, again another first, and something I did want, a cool find for sure. Has anyone seen similar ? THANKS

Love the whistle, when you get tired of it, come lose it in my yard.

Sorry NOT Silver at all, the core is Nickel Silver, or German Silver, which is not silver at all, but shiny.

Took a better look at the letters E.P.N.S.....I knew it was too good to be true.

Bummer.

cool whistle rick & bummer on the silver

Must be nice having the larger denomination coins there to find. Am hoping that dollar or five dollar coins will get put into circulation here in the States. That whistle is a very cool find there I am still looking to detect my first one of any sort here :treasurechest:

Hey, that whistle is likely pewter not tin, and it probably dates to the early or mid 1800s. So a VERY nice find there. Pewter "military" whistles book $150-200 in many cases.

Congrats,

Buck

Rick, I am not sure but the whistle might have been used for falconry or Hawking. You may be able to find out through the Whistle Museum.
Too bad about the silver buddy, I guess you will have to just go out and find the real thing.

well, keep digging... I have a few silver ends like that now and also dug hundreds of copper ones but they are out there...

Supernice Whistle find !!
The epns pieces can be Ided by the tone you got before recovery, midrange nickel...
Lots of them made in the 'new world' display pseudo hallmarks similar to the genuine British sterling.
earlier plate with it's brass core can be a letdown when recovered covered by mud, then it's yellow when you rinse it.
Been there too many times myself...
Real silver flatware will come, Well I remember the days.... :laughing9:
Great hunt and post, Thanks!
