Yeah I know, get some books already.
In the pic without the buckles, there's a pin in the bottom left corner that says "Scoville Mfg co made in USA". Found a second "site" today (in the same pic., two circular objects) are those sites for rifles? Also the pic with the buckles has a giant rivet, could that be for a knapsack hook? And what about that crazy metal wire with the little ball? And could God create a rock so big he couldn't move it? So many questions. Thankya folks!

Re: Tiny Civil War Whatzits

The pin in the bottom left corner looks like a thumb wheel to a oil lamp.

Yep I found a little buckle like the one in the top left of your picture a few weeks back and it was id'd as a suspender buckle.

I fail to see what makes these items Civil War relics :icon_scratch:

Is there any verification as to dates?

Heck, going that route, there's no way to verify ANYTHING unless you were there to witness it at the time, regardless of date marks or not ??? I have dug several similar items at a known encampment area, so until they can be disproven as CW I will continue to believe they are 8)

Well I did find these items with all these other goodies, most of which have been verified as C.War related. That doesn't mean my whatzits are, does make it more likely though, huh. You could identify something as NOT civil war related and be helpful.

Aren't those 2 round items whats left of old watch keys????

yeap, no way of accurately dating those, as they are standard watch winders & were used for many years.

I have to say again, that everyone posting in the what is it should start from a clean slate. The title would be better as 'Whatzit's found at a CW camp'. However this still leads people to ID them as CW. I never give more than measurements, photo's, metal content & some possibilities. Never assume anything, thats the way I work. Otherwise everything I find on a Roman Villa site IS Roman. (a tactic used on ebay to make money)

I'm not having a go at anyone just trying to open up everyones mind who posts on the WHAT IS IT forum. Otherwise if you know its CW then you must have the evidence & therefore know what it is. The evidence is not that it was a CW camp. This as you say only makes it more likely not 100%.

Yep.. pretty sure that is what they are.. I found one with the rest of the "remains" of a watch... and it was period.. and..

DAMN!! nice site you are digging there!!!! Reminds me of the "old days" of hitting big camps.. ;-) pound it.. and pound it hard!!!

Nice scale slides in your CW finds (last photo)!  Great buttons, a belt keeper...and the list goes on!  Actually several pieces of shoulder scales there, as well as a finial from a cartridge box or cap box too.

Now in terms of the whatzits...

The rivet was probably not a J-hook button as you suggest...just a rivet from some sort of horse tack probably.  The second whatzit photo, top left--*could be* part of a set of "puppy paws" from a belt plate...it's hard to tell though from the photo.

The two little things in that same photo in the center (small, hollow brass circles) are most certainly pocket watch winding keys.

Any markings on the silver item in the first Whatzit photo? It sure is a beautiful keeper. I wouldn't mind seeing a close-up of it, and the back of it.

Looks like paws to me too. The stubs should be wider apart. Maybe just an odd angle.

Re: Tiny Whatzits found in a probable Civil War encampment

Thanks again for the info., sounds pretty solid for four of the items (suspender buckle, 2 watch keys, and the oil lamp thumb wheel). Here are a few more close-ups. Buckleboy, there are no marks that I can see for the thin silver looking object, the vdi is 26 and it's very light. It's about the size of a nickle.
