Tonight I took my ATPro with the 5x8 back to a yard I had little luck with last year with the standard coil. Backyard was a bust, minus a few nickels. The front yard, which I remember being extremely noisy and junky, became much more understandable with the 5x8. By the time I got to the front it was almost dark, but quickly snagged this really sharp 1906 fish scale. I'm heading back there next time I get out to detect.

It looks like this coin has great detail under the grime. I'm not a believer in cleaning coins, but this one is tempting me.

Congrats on the fish scale! Great looking coin =)

Is the coin better of 'as is', or would getting the grime off improve the coin?

What is "properly cleaned?" From what I understand most grading companies will only state "cleaned" and i.e. "AU-50 details" which I think is not the same as the coin actually being in that grade.

Properly cleaned, so as not to adversely affect its value, that coin might grade at least MS-60 (a retail value of $125). At MS-63, that retail value doubles. Great find !!

Looks really crisp under the layer of crud, just how crisp it's hard to tell until it's off. It's a toss on what to do as it's your coin to decide, if it's just for your own viewing pleasure then I'd say clean it up and enjoy the view.

(Is it time now do I duck my head for the cleaning comment? :laughing7:)

I'm thinking I might do the acetone bath with gentle rolling of a wooden q-tip. I'll post some "after" pics if I do attempt it.

That is a fantastic fishcale. It looks like a wide 1906.

I can't seem to source a reference for a wide variety 06 anywhere, any help on this?

I'm aware of the '03 (five cent) being minted with either 21 or 22 leaves and the '08 having round or pointed leaves, but an '06 looking like a 'wide 1906' will be a new one for me also. I'll looking forward to learning about it.

Thanks Gio, I think you're right.

Pepper and Makaydon, here is a page from the Charlton Standard. I wouldn't have noticed the possible variety, that Giothe Greek is on the ball lol!

And in the current condition it will say "corroded." So, not much lost either way. :D
