It appears to be a souvenir from the Basilica of Sainte-Anne de Beaupré in Quebec. It may be a reliquary for what is called a Third Class, Second Category religious relic— e.g., a fragment of a piece of cloth brought to the shrine (or site of the vision) of a saint.

I don't think the gift shop would sell matchholders.It's still a little small for matches I think.Also,the place burnt to the ground in 1922,just don't seem right,does it? I would think a piece of cloth as PBK mentioned or perhaps a small rosary.Here's some more info. about the shrine.http://www.ssadb.qc.ca/en/index.htm.There is an email address listed on the "Available Services" page under the "Church Store" info. at the bottom of the page.Perhaps an email would clear this up.2 of you replied while I was typing/researching this so i'm still posting it.

coming from that type place it seems unlikely but i have seen match holders much like this, although maybe a little larger that held wooden matches...just a guess......g

thinking on it some more, a place like that most likely had alot of candles to light at some time or another.....
