Found this tiny cannon or swivel gun. Was thinking it’s toy, it’s only 2.5” long, brass but has a bored barrel an fuse hole. It was at an 18th century site. Seems too small for a powder tester.

Also found a cool silver button.

That cannon is pretty cool. Like the button too.

Nice finds! Can we see a pic of the back of the button?

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Cool finds, congrats!

Cool cannon!! Cannon is likely a lot later than you suspect since the trunions are center mounted. Center mounted trunions didn't come into use until the 1840s, 1700s cannons had their trunions on the bottom third of the barrel.

Believe it or not they started making firing Toy cannon's in the beginning of the 16th C in Britain.

Although we say 'toy' you would have been a very lucky rich kid to have one. Most are thought to be Gentlemen's table pieces, an after Dinner bang, so to speak.

This Cannon design is dated to the 18th C & is in my book as a Type 3, Design 1.

For those that think is should be based on an actual cannon type, like some are, the book states that this is 'not a normal gun shape'.

Nice find, some were weak or over packed with powder & blow up, so yours is in nice shape.

I actually have a stunning 17th C Petronel & these along with the cannon always get the most attention when I'm displaying stuff;

Awesome finds, nice ID Cru! I love that silver button, I have found hundreds of buttons, I have never found a silver one, (seen Scrappy dig one one day in one of my fields) I have found silver cuff links. I would like to see the other side please?

Good info CRU Ive seen a few posted on here before thats really cool Well done on those finds

Imagine that little Cannon could take some little lead soldiers out of the game!

Bang on with the date. We find these cannons in many different sizes up to 6 inches. All the ones I've had are about 2-3 inches. They are in fact working toys that were commonly used judging by the number that have turned up in Britain. Well preserved items, your soil is spot on. Excellent stuff!

Congrats on some nice finds!
