Hey y’all I dug this little Button recently, and it has me perplexed. I dug it on my early 1800’s site, but it is unlike any of the other buttons I have found. It is very small, and is concave rather than flat. If anybody could help with the type or age that would be much appreciated. Thanks! 51D55BE1-D639-4F2C-B53A-AB62D0E5BE26.webp2DC54C14-3313-4E44-AC07-02E9EC0FE9A0.webpEC4626A6-004B-4682-A172-E6D4DD014890.webp900994E3-50D4-4034-AA2B-E71C2CAF138A.webp

Not to nit pick but I think the correct term is convex. Have you cleaned the back to see if there is a makers mark? It most likely dates to the late 1700s-early 1800sand could have had several uses. Maybe from a ladies dress or even a shoe.

Great advice from fyrffytr1.
Kind of reminds me of the convex War of 1812 uniform cuff buttons that pop up on the sites I detect.

"Here are examples of 9 War of 1812 US Military buttons that were dug/found in the 1940's-1950's at Sackets Harbor NY. One ‘Star’ infantry cuff buttons-one with shank and one without. Two U.S. button-shanks are present but flattened. Two ‘Star’ I Infantry buttons-one with shank, other shank is missing. On the second button, can make out the oval and star and part of the ‘I’. One Infantry Eagle with stars and an oval US cuff button."

Good advice to clean the back, with a makers mark you can date it more precisely.

Thanks for the replies y’all. All the suggestions I have been offered have been helpful. You’re right about the convex, I am just a teensy bit dumb at times. As for the metal I am not sure, as I don’t have it on me. Since I have found a good number of buttons, I am not against cleaning. Do any of y’all have tips for cleaning buttons? If I can clean it and there’s something interesting I will post pictures. Thanks!

I would just use water and a tooth brush or tooth pick.
