I found this tiny button at a site ive dated to the 1820's I got an iron hit but I think its brass because there is no rust on it.
if it is even a button, where would such a small button come from? anybody seen anything like this before?

Is there a hole going through that little "blob" (for lack of a better word) looking thing on the back?

no hole, so far the site has produced 5 flat buttons, gun parts, lead balls, nails, and pieces of skillets and such. also considering at the time this was indian country. a ladies shoe button seems out of place but I'm not ruling it out

There is always women there. The house I grew up in was a farmhouse in 1760 it was the edge of the frontier. A family lived there. when the men were off at the Grist Mill Indians attacked and murdered the mother and took several children hostage. the men formed a posse they dressed as Indians so they would be able to travel without being attacked tracked them to the Fort Duquesne area some 30 miles away and actually managed to retrieve the children. Believe me women were in the thick of it when it comes to pioneering

Does it stick to a magnet??
You might try soaking it in catsup over night and see if that takes off the crud.

not magnetic, I hit it with naval jelly it looks just like the flatbuttons I think brass, no markings, I agree about the ladies, the frontier wouldn't grow very fast if it was all guys, in my head I was picturing a trader passing through indian country set up camp on the hill for a bit, now it seems he could have had a lady friend

Cru took the words out of my mouth. Now that it's cleaned up it is clear to see that it is a tack head.

Is it white in color or is that just the photo? I agree, looks like a very old furniture tack head.

its brass colored no matter how many angles I tried the pic came out white, I duno ladies shoe, tack from furniture, are possible but I've found no other items relating to women and furniture seems out of place in a campsite, I noticed similar studs on my pistol holder which I'm kind of leaning towards something similar because of other gun and gun related items around but thanks for the ideas

Its a Tack Head. These were used on so many types of items & are found everywhere. Don't over think it.
