Went out yesterday to a creek I've been to twice but never found anything. The third times the charm! My brother found a nice reworked arowhead into a scraper. Then we waited out a storm under a tree but still got completly soaked. As soon as the rain let up we knew the water would be on the rise so the race was on. Fifteen minuites later I found this. The water came up a foot in the next hour, and by the time we came back down the stream the axe would have been under water and maybe washed away if I hadn't rescued it.

Awsome find and pictures. Nice axe. I really like that style. Nice recovery all_atv

Wow, that's a very cool find. I know a thing or two about Keokuk (1/2 groove) axes and I have to say that it's the first one I've seen in that particular shape. It's probably some sort of trophy style and you may never see another one quite like it. Although it's not really a miniature because that's kind of a common size the shape really makes up for it. That's really a fantastic find and quite rare. Axes of that size aren't rare in these parts but one with that style and finish are extremely rare. I'll vote for a banner.

Nice find bud!!!

Thanks guys! Hippy, are the keokuks just from around this area or just first discovered here? This axe is really well worked the pics just don't show all the detail. Like in the third pic you can't see but there's a little bit of a channel ground into it along the center line.
Thanks again for the votes!

The center of Keokuk axe universe is Lowell, Iowa. They have been found in about a 350 mile radius of Lowell but nearly 70% of them are found or reported to be found within a 100 mile radius of Lowell. Van Buren County, Iowa has had the most reported Keokuk axe finds followed by Henry County, Iowa and Adams County, Illinois. They are predominantly found in the Mississippi River Valleys and it's primary, immediate tributaries. The Skunk, Iowa, Cedar, Des Moines Rivers have lots of Keokuks found near them and many of the creeks that feed those rivers are good places to find them.

Thanks Hippy, It is from Van Buren Co! I have permission on a farm by Lowell too, guess I gotta get over there more often. Were going back to the same stream today the water should be down.
