Being a survivor of a very serious tick borne disease I tend to pay close attention to articles published on this topic. The trusted name of Consumer reports by most is my recent area of research. https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/insect-repellent/buying-guide/index.htm This article is very informative and today I received my July 2019 issue and they again have a good bit of data on which repellents are the subject. If you spend time in the field then this would be a good source for data to help bring you back home safe without any hitch hikers.

Yes, I was just reading mine. I believe ticks are worse than ever since we lost some of their important natural predators. Bobwhite quail love to gobble down ticks. Sadly, they have disappeared from my area. I have not seen nor heard one here for over 20 years.

I had one latched on a few weeks ago, and I didn't even hit the high grass. I started using deep woods off even in the short grass parks. I saw a tick start to crawl up my leg yesterday, hit the skin where I had used the bug spray, and almost run back down my leg. I guess it works pretty good.

I've found if you shower as soon as you get home, they wash off before biting.
Maybe my blood isn't what they are looking for.
Been bitten 4-5 times in my life, but picked off hundreds.

Have you considered hunting predators and raising quail to release?
Feral cats are hell on quail.

I have quail, turkeys, ect..and plenty of ticks.

Already had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and thankfully we don't have Lyme Disease here because our tick are in no way put off by bug spray. I can spray that stuff till I'm wet with it and they still climb aboard.

Them and snakes are both growing in numbers.

Quail releases have not worked in this area and stocking is unlikely to have a serious role in restoring populations.
Feral cats are blamed for many perceived issues - but the reality is not as simple. They also destroy invasive bird species, not just natives, and help control voles and mice.
