Thurston's Route Book, from Philadelphia to Chicago 1863 (Train)
Just came across this very interesting book online. It is a stop by stop train ride by George Thurston of Pittsburgh, written in 1863.
Starting in Philadelphia, he explains every train stop between Philly and Pittsburgh, what purpose each train stop was for such as mail, passengers, repairs and inspections, wood and water, etc.
He also explains the history and lore of every town the train passes thru, indian battles, population, incorporation, stage routes, businesses, geological features, people, silver and lead mines......
This guy did a heck of a job in his observations and historical references. Mile by mile!
There's a search feature for the book I haven't tried...could be a nice research tool for ghost towns and train stations.
Here's the link to the book.http://www.archive.org/stream/thurstonsroutebo00pitt
Enjoy
