Went out yesterday morning down the street where and old red barn has been since at least the early 1900's. Went all around the barn and only found 1 clad nickel and 1 clad quarter (newer state ones-Ohio). Thought I would find some other because the loft in the barn was used by a local producer who would practice his plays there before they were brought to the theater. Both coins were on the surface in fact. Only dug up can slaw and pop tops...not even much of them. Just basically searched around the perimeter of the barn, did not spread out any further away but will eventually.
On to the proposition....while digging one of my can slaw finds, a family came up to me and started asking questions about the detector and the husband asked if he could borrow my detector to find his wedding ring that he lost while spreading dirt or something...did not understand too much because of heavy accent. Anyway they saw I was a little reluctant about lending soemone my detector but the asked if I could find it for them. They live a few blocks away form my house so I told them I would give it a try as long as they can tell me where they think it was lost. None of us had paper and pen with so I told them which house I live in and told them when they wanted me to come just stop by my house and we can schedule something. Will let you all know how I make out finding it.
Now I have a question for all of you:
On my way back to my house (which was just up the street) I was detecting between some trees and came up with a strong dime signal. The detector just registered this dime and no other symbols no matter what mode I put the detector in or what direction I was swinging...just this same dime signal at 4+ inches. Even that depth never changed. Naturally I started digging and noticed that the dirt was loose. I remembered that I had already investigated this hole with my old detector and kept getting a strong reading with the old one also. Now I was basically opening my old hole ...don't even go there people and i had dug it pretty deep (about 6 inches at least and about the same 6 inches in diameter) and could not produce whatever the detectors were targeting. This would have been the perfect time for a pinpointer, which I unfortunatly lack, so i just kept digging. Every few scoopfuls of dirt that I brought out of the hole I would check the dirt pile and the hole and whatever it is was still in the hole. Now I was getting close to the time I had left so I just buried the hole up again without finding out what was in there. I went down the road again this morning with my Ace 250 and went back to the spot because at the time I was digging I did not remember what the detector was telling me so I went to check it out again and this is how I know that it was the dime symbol and 4+ inches in all metal mode or even in jewelry mode.
Anyway sorry for the long description but wanted to fill you all in on what I was getting. Now this is the question....based on what I have described to you, do you think it was trash or that there really might be a coin down there? Could it have been a silver dime or something that gave it such a strong signal under this symbol? Would a regular dime have done the same? Have any of you found trash items that would have done such a strong target? Would you have just kept digging deeper and wider until you figured out exactly what it was, which I will do soon as I get permission from the Mrs. to go again Just don't want to waste too much time trying to find a soda can or something stupid. might even have to bring more tools with me because of thick roots and my trowel just doesn't cut it.
Let me know of any of your experiences like this and what was the outcome...was it a real coin or trash?
Thanks and again sorry for the long post.
