It does look real but they can fake anything! But still has the look of old pottery.

Greeneman215-- what an awesome find, things like this keep me coming back to thrift stores. Here we are a year later... have you learned anything about it since your posting? If someone faked that, they certainly put a hell of a lot of time & effort into it, particularly with the fading red pigments. Almost looks to be carved from a whale vertebrae?

It's a Polynesian sex god...

Don't let your wife see it or you'll never get any sleep! :occasion14:

Sorry for late reply, I never did find anymore information about it. It sits in my barrister. I'm almost certain it's pottery. It does look old to me and for $2 you can't beat it. It didn't have a price on it at first so I had to wait until the next day for them to call me with a price of $2 lol.

Google Nicoyan Pottery. Probably found in the Guanacaste area of Costa Rica, probably closer to the Nicaraguan border than the thinner walled classic Nicoyan pottery found in central Guanacaste.

Actually looks like an elephant! I have a collection of Panamanian ceramics from the chiriqui region and the style does not match . My feeling is that is fake. The thickness of the walls seems too much.
