I've been anticipating a major surge in new jewelry at one thrift store. Today they made it happen. Unfortunately, their pricing department doubled the spot price for most pieces. Fortunately for me, I used Groupons that cost $15 for $30 of store credit.

Some of their silver was way over spot. I bought a things anyway just because I believe I can resell them for a profit. Their gold on the other hand, was priced under spot. Still got it with a Groupon.

So what I got: Two pairs of nice silver earrings. I believe they are both cubic zirconia, but they are in like perfect condition other than a slight bend in the posts. I got a very nice looking silver ring, but am unsure what the pink stone is - maybe CZ with CZ accents? Hopefully better. Lastly I picked out a pair of 14K earrings that have two strands of box chain hanging from them.

Total 14K weight is 1.3 grams.
Total 925 weight is 16.2 grams.

Any thoughts on what these pieces might go for on eBay? Not as scrap, though!

What I didn't get: a solid sterling brooch featuring roses. Worth about $8 in scrap, but they wanted too much for it. I should have checked the hallmark better to make sure its not worth something more. Also there was a bead & sterling bracelet that was priced $8-9, but hardly more than a few grams of sterling. And finally there was a small sterling cross pendant that was priced for $8. Toooo much.

If I get the chance I will buy the brooch when it goes on sale - if it is still there. I'll check out its makers marks tomorrow and see if it is worth anything. Hopefully more jewelry is put out tomorrow - a lot of space in their jewelry counter still!

For brooches there a alot of good names. The pros know a ton of good names. Look for Judith Jack, her mark is JJ inside of a diamond shape. I just got a 6 gram sterling James Avery monogramed ring today for $10 and I would have bouht anything James Avery sterling that they had. James Avery is a key name to look for. One of his marks is a 3 candle candelabra and the letters JA. HH

Thanks a ton!

I only caught that the piece was marked sterling, but I do know that there were other marks inside. I'll check it out tomorrow morning and research thoroughly!

However, theirs is said to be marked only "925".

be careful. use a magnet if you can, I have fallen for a few fake sterling pieces stamped 925 some marked Sterling. I was in too much of a hurry and didn't look close enough.

So, funny story:

After I read this I thought well now is as good a time as any to test my haul. So I check the pair of earrings with the blue stone & white stone accents. Failed the scratch test. Ugh. Then I look at the other pair. They check out. Gold checks out. Then I look at the ring. Did I even remember to magnetic test it? I couldn't recall. I was too excited by its beauty and it didn't even cross my mind. So I bring the magnet to it and.. SON OF A.

Part two of funny story:

So I head back down to thrift store to to exchanges. I trade earrings for same priced rose brooch. Can't quire make out makers mark, but I don't think its James Avery. Then I spend the next 20 minutes searching through jewelry that I had already cherry picked. First I pull out a Joan Rivers bee brooch. Figure I could at least double my money on it for $5. 10 minutes later I was still short $12. Then I saw it! A dainty chain with a triple rose pendant. A match for the brooch, perhaps? Price tag read $15. Clasp read 925. Pendant read JA with the logo you had just mentioned. Awesomeeee! Looked it up on eBay and they seem to be going for $45+.

And so my story has a happy ending!

Go to James Avery's website and it may still be produced, you can get more info there. The site even has a printable ring sizer. HH

Nice, I just bought a Presidium Duotester. I'm hoping it will help me out with the menagerie of stones that I need to ID.

Here is a James Avery hallmark. I like this mark.

There was one other piece that I purchased with the store credit from returning the ring & one pair of earrings. It's not worth much, but for under $5 I picked up a Joan Rivers bee pin. Saw one in the same style sell for $25 with a lot of bidding action. Starting my auction at $19.99 with $29.99 BIN. We'll see how it goes :P
