This morning I detected an old home I passed as my colonial spot was a bust. The guy is a world war 2 vet and told me to have at it but another guy had detected couple years ago. Didn't matter as I found ~10 wheats, 2 mercs, and three large cents. There was either previous activity or from a coin collection as the house wasn't that old. Two right next to each other 5 feet from the other one. I ended up scratching 1 of them pretty good. When I picked up the first one I literally thought "You don't belong here". What say you all on cleaning the caked dirt off based on the pictures? Toothpick, olive oil, or peroxide?

Still looking for my first LC. Not many here in Kansas. Congrats on finding three.

Unexpected treasures are the best treasures.

3 LC'S always makes a Great day Detecting. I soak mine in hot peroxide.

Nice multiple LC find! I am still waiting to find multiple in one day. I would say all three were lost somewhere during time of circulation judging by the amount of crud built up on them.

Nice finds. The endless debate is Olive oil vs. peroxide. I've done both, but have found it depends on what you're trying to get off the coin. In the end, a few weeks in Olive oil always does the trick. Don't rush the process. I'm betting that crud locked in a bunch of detail so woo the outer layer off like you would a lady...

Lol

Again congrats.

Just some advice from personal experience but I much prefer mineral oil over the olive oil. And I've had great luck with the hp. All depends what's hiding underneath. The mineral oil doesnt seem to darken the coin quite as much and is more pure

I've heard that a lot but have yet to try it. Probably would save me money and my old lady would stop yelling at me for using her fancy salad Olive oil.

Nope she will just keep yelling at you about something else lol. Mine always does :-)

I vote toothpick first. Get all you can with them, then if you want, try the oil. I have ruined a few with HP.

I would be an Old Dude be the time I got all my coppers cleaned. Vino would be in the ground lol

That's a promising site for sure ! Maybe you clean one of those up and give it to the old Gentleman who gave you permission , and
a he says "You just come on back any old time ".

Hey Vino can HIRE people to clean his, lol. Brad would probably lick them[emoji1]

I see some flaking on at least one of them, so I would avoid HP. Mineral oil would be my first choice on those coins. But they seem to be pretty far gone, so don't sweat it if they don't improve much.

I've found 7 large coppers, but only 2 had good details. I could barely read the dates on 3 of them and 2 are unknown because they are completely smooth. That's the way it is with 200 year old coppers.
