Here are three buttons from a revolutionary war site. I know absolutely nothing about old military buttons so would appreciate ANY information. It will give me a jump-start on an area I haven't researched at all.

Of the three the front of the gilt one shows no detail but says something on the back which could possibly be FRANCE, but I don't know. Also has a design including a scroll-type design of which you can see part in the picture.

The second shows a 54 on the front in the middle of a wreath with a crown on top. The back also has words which I can't make out.

The third says HINDU IBERIAN PENINSULA with an elephant over a 76. Don;'t see anything on the back.

The 54 could be the 54th Regiment of Foot - if not it looks British anyway

And look at the 76th Regiment of Foot above, pretty good match?

The plain one is probably 1800-1830 - Civilian, but may have been used as Military.

They are in great condition, the ones I find are normally in bits. 8)

If you read the site (look at Battalian links etc..) - the 54th were at the Rev War but the 76th nearest battle was in 1812 on the Canadian boarder??

WOW. Thanks for the info. They were all found within a few feet of each other on an island in the East Indies. Where the buttons were, there were also grapeshot, musket balls, etc. Also the clay and metal items I asked about in an earlier post came from about the same spot. An important naval battle took place not far from there, I think it was Romney(?). Thanks again.

After reading the sites that you listed, I think it would be more accurate if I called it a Revolutionary era battle site. I think the battle (one of them) was during the Seven Years War and one after the Revolution (my best guess would be 1803) when the British took back the island from the French. I am really confident now that the two are the 54th Foot and the 76th Foot buttons. I found mention that the 76th was used at times as marines. The location where I found them was below a fortification where they may have well landed to take over the fortifications and the island. Or of course, it well could be otherwise. The location was heavily used even centuries earlier though, so the 54th button just as well been from the Seven Years War.

Your information was very useful in helping me get a better view of why things were where they were. Thanks much.

Would like any other hints on these buttons, especially the gilt one.
