I did not get much time to hunt this summer but for the last month I have had a chance to hit a lot where they tore down three houses. I was amazed that I only found two silver coins, a 1909 dime & 1918 slq, I did pull out a 1923s buff & several common date wheat's and two Indians 1891 & 1901. The best finds of the summer have been three tokens, one from my home town & the other 2 from a town 20 miles north. All three date as far back as 1875, the one is a $ token & the other two are 5 cent token.

I have spent 10 minutes wondering how they got a stamp to make a backwards N. The Cedar City one is nice. Is that the dollar token?

that octagonal token with the backwards 'N's is fantastic :headbang: :headbang:

Z would be backwards, also. Wouldn't it? I am no good at this crap. I can't turn a piece of linoleum upside down and cut the shape right for right side up. Remember when you took the aptitude tests in 7th grade, and there was the square block with 3 tubes out of it with tops and/or bottoms colored. Then you were supposed to pick out which matched it , the one going this way, that way or backackwards pointing down. I flunked that so bad that they told me not to try and join the Army. I should learn to be a disc jockey.

? did they use different punches for printing and they picked up the wrong one ?? this is what i love about m,d,

Each letter was struck individually, some "stronger" than others. None of the "N' characters appear to be the same, so my guess is that the N punch was missing so they used a straight punch to create a backwards N.

Very cool token!

Great find Bula, I only seen 2 tokens posted to your post you said you found 3. Any chance you could show the #3

I sent you a Pm

Dave.

The Cedar token is the 1$, I wonder if who made the stamps forgot to reverse the n when they were made. Now all I need are the other denominations that the store had, I'm sure I can get them it only took me five years to find these two.

I would say the N stamp was just cut/engraved wrong. If you look at the other letters, they also appear differently with each strike, and you can see flares etc on the N character. It was common practice in those early days to not waste items - if the N was backwards because of an error, so be it, fix it on the next batch!

I disagree .. The "N" in "merchandise" is no way near the "N" in "In" (under the 5¢). Maybe they had two that were backwards, but those two N's were obviously not struck by the same punch!

looking at them both I think there might have been two different punches used also they used a (f) instead of an (e) in merchandisf. cool not only old but an error as well.

Now you have me being paranoid about things. Like the E that is an F but may be a bad punched E. And the M & M Co that may be bad punched resulting in a Cc. But if you look at the Ms and Ws, there are at least 3 different punches there. But also, the letters seems somewhat uniform like the letters were all together. For the most part. Like the Y is wide. and Merchandise is messed up. But ParawanCOOPM&MCo looks to be a single stamp. Maybe that is why the o got weak on the last side.
