Having been vised and ruining the looks of the coin then I would think it would not have been intended for jewelry rather to be put on a string for safekeeping ?
Thanks !!

Long ago in some areas, silver was thought to have special powers. I have a half dime with a hole that belonged to my great grandmother. I was told that it was worn to cure high fevers, for babies teething, for good luck etc.
Evidence of the stinging bite of inflation. Or currency devaluation. ?
Money just doesn't go as far these days.
A whole dime would be worth fractionally more.
Looks like 1884 to me. The scratches are probably associated with the making of the hole.
Natives often did this to coins to wear as adornment and the image wasn't important as they just wanted the flash from the silver.
