I managed to get out for a bit over the weekend to a couple places. Options are very limited this time of year. The first place gave up a couple coins – a nice 1909 wheat penny, and a V nickel that looks like 1901 in the picture but 1891 in your hand, and a lead plate that apparently once belonged to a man (or woman) named R. B. Cooper. This place has given up buttons and coins from the mid-1800s when a hotel stood on the property and from the early 1900s when people would drive up from the city to picnic. However, I think I have about cleaned it out now. The second place was an old house that I hit periodically. I have found a couple Draped Bust large cents, a couple two cent pieces, and quite a few Indian Heads here, along with a few buttons including a couple tombacs. The place could go back as far as the late 1700s.

Hmmm....D. B. Cooper??
Upon further review.... R. B. Cooper

In the silver era, but silver was not to be had :dontknow:

Nothing like seeing a big SILVERY tombac button in the hole to get your blood pumping!

At the end of the day not much, but nice to get out, especially this time of year. HH to all that brave the heat!

No silver but silverish with that dime. Do you think that plate was a luggage tag or something? I'd call it a good hunt. Good luck.

Maybe a luggage plate. It has a hole in the center of the back that doesn't go all the way through.

Nice hunt congratulations! :occasion14:

Looks like a great hunt, love the IHP!:icon_thumleft:

Great hunt Steve! A couple nice coin saves with the V and IHP’s. I’ve found a couple dozen IHP’s and a bunch of Buffs but only 1 V in our area. Not sure why. The tombac looks like it popped out with almost no tarnishing, sweet. And glad to see you didn’t get skunked on the spoon front. Congrats!!

There are actually two V nickels in that pic. One is so worn that all you can see is the front of her face. That might be the odd coin that eludes you for some reason that doesn't make sense. Mine has been seated silver. I have found at least six V nickels in the last three years and spend half my time on sites that are too old to have any chance of finding one.

Now that is interesting. This could easily date from that period based on other things I have found at this spot. Thanks. I'll look into that a little further.

Great finds Steve. Hunting the early sites in the woods during the summer has to be challenging! Congrats.

Actually these sites were mowed grass. You won't find me in the woods this time of year!

What is tombac? What is it, just white metal with no silver? Gary

Tombac
, as it is spelled in French, or tombak, is a brassalloy with high copper content and 5–20% zinc content.[SUP][1][/SUP]Tin , lead or arsenic may be added for colouration. [SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3] [/SUP]It is a cheap malleable alloy mainly used for medals
ornament , decoration and some munitions . In older use, the term may apply to brass alloy with a zinc content as high as 28–35%

Looks like you picked up some nice coins, even if you didnt find D.B. Nice finds Steve.

Thanks for tombac info. I think the Germans used it in WW2 for medals or buttons. Gary
