Hello everyone, it's been a while since I have posted, my hunts lately have been pretty lean, a silver dime here an Indian there, etc. etc. ...... but today I got very excited when I saw what appeared to be a large silver coin in the hole! I saw what appeared to be the size of the Silver dollar with an eagle figure on the coin, I couldn't believe my eyes, and then when I picked it up it seemed awfully lightweight.

I very carefully brushed away some dirt and then I saw the words; Readers Digest, $100,000 Lucky Sweepstakes Coin. WTF !
Obviously a aluminum token.

No happy dance for me....... I did manage to find a silver Mercury Dime 1945 and a old beat up Buffalo Nickel.

Enjoy the photos

I dug a huge aluminum store token like that once, thought the same thing

still some good finds!!

Bummer!! Still got a nice looking dime though!

What's worse, I dug a Morgan Dollar with the entire front sanded smooth.

Wow, that's the best and worst of both worlds-extreme high and extreme low. I've found stuff I thought was something else, but nothing that convincing. I sure hope I don't either!

Still a cool find Dude.
I once flipped a plug and saw a gold eagle staring back at me..
I almost pooped myself, till I turned it over and saw it was a token..
Oh well, keep digging.
George

Cool find but I can imagine your disappointment.

Maybe next time right??'At least you got silver. I haven't found any since last August.

Congrats on your silver, your Buff and your almost silver dollar.

I can see how the eagle got the heart pumpin. But a merc and buff in the same day is a great day in my book!

OH man, that is so funny. At lunch today I had almost the EXACT same thing happen... Rang up as silver dollar (which I've NEVER seen on my detector before). I dug down, and the plug came up with a silver dollar round thing looking at me! I was totally stoked... then picked up the coin, which weighed all of 6 grams at most... Instant disappointment. On mine, was some sort of prayer coin and religious saying. Definitely a token of sorts.

Still, too funny to see someone else with the same experience today. Funny in a bad way. :(

I've dug a few aluminum "play coin" dimes that I thought initially were trimes or 1/2 reals. It sucks, but funny at the same time. Sometimes they are worth more than the coin you thought you dug. Spanish silver and especially cut silver just isn't worth much :dontknow:

You are correct mobile miner. I live in central mississippi, I've found a few Mardi Gras tokens here. At least the tokens are dated. Lol

Ouch! :sad10: But as a token, I wouldn't mind one that said $100,000.

Last week at beach I dug a half-dollar-size that I hoped was an old coin, but the light weight & a Biblical quote showed quickly it was a medal, not the old coin I'd hoped. Still, these finds of tokens & medals are usually interesting, after our disappointment ebbs away. Andi

Haven't we all been on that big silver high to suddenly crash. Cool token though, you at least dug 3 keepers:thumbsup:

I had the same thing happen, turned out to be a Nagano Olympics token... but for a couple of seconds, that reeded edge had me going.

My psych out was a Bahamas silver dollar.....was so disappointed I never bothered to research it....Imma go find it and check to see if it was silver. That was 10 years ago.

Man, the dirt shot sure looks like the reverse of a Morgan. I can only imagine the sudden realization was a huge bummer. I have dug a few junk tokens that gave me the same euphoria for a few seconds. Congrats on the silvers though. Hopefully they allowed you to laugh at the token.
