Thos of you who found old coins in your yards

I think everyone has detected thier yard before.Where else is there to practice so close to home. :) You need to do some research and find out what was there before your neighborhood was built. There was some Revolutionary as well as Civil war activity in your area.Maybe your neighborhood sits on top of an old encampment. It's possible.Besides, don't look at it like your "tearing up the yard",look at it as good practice for cutting decent plugs.Good luck and keep us posted.

My house and most of my neighborhood were built in 1979. I have a vintage map from 1872 that shows this area being farmland, with mostly 80+ acre parcels.

I've hunted my property extensively and found a bunch of modern clad. I also found a coin that just didn't belong here (Southeast Michigan): A 1971 British Twopence. That was right next to the sidewalk, so I'm thinking someone dropped it while walking by.

The problem with modern houses is that many had fill dirt brought in to grade the property. That doesn't mean there won't be good finds there, just that anything that was there before construction is even deeper now. On the other hand, a lot of sites had the dirt from the excavation spread around the lot, so the good stuff could be right under the grass.

Wouldn't hurt to swing the coil.

My house was built in the 1950's. I have no idea what was on the property before that. We bought the house in 1997.

So far I found a 1945 Walker half dollar that looks like it was just minted. Two mercury dimes (1945 and 1917), some wheat pennies, three war nickels, some clad coins and two indiana head pennies (1902 and 1863).

Also, I found a 1939 Nazi bronze star medal. Not in the best of shape, but a very cool find.

I also know that the neighbor lady lost a couple rings in our yard when she was a lot younger - haven't found any yet, but the search continues. Plus she told me I can search her yard anytime (I just haven't gotten to it yet).

I'd try it out - you never know.

My house was built in 1986, nothing old there. My parents house was built in 1939. So far I haven't found any silver there, just modern clad and a few pennies from the 60's. I'm thinkin it's there, but deep. I'm gonna clean out the trash when the grass dies and then listen for the whispers this winter.

urbss, those are some excellent finds.

wow awesome finds! We live an an older house to and the only change I found in our yard was the change that fell out of my hubby's pocket while mowing the lawn ,apparently..lol found lots of old coins in my inlaws yard though.. great going!

My house was built in 1920. I found a quarter; a nickel; and a few pennies in my driveway. I detected some in my backyard and found a iron foundation post anchor for putting a beam in. I also found a 1940's or 50's truck rim at about 20 inches. Loud signal over a large area....had to dig it! It may have been a large metal box with coins or something......no such luck; but it was fun!

My home built 1986 over an existing 100 year old home. Tis a shame I wasn't detecting back then. I have found nothing on this property but a few modern pennies and one dime.

There was another home we owned on the property that was over 120 years old(used to be a small church). Both homes and yard have been covered by a lot of soil / rock.

Shame I bet there was some good stuff there.

My house was built in the 1930s. I scanned while replacing my back deck and found an aluminum Five Franc piece from France, dated 1945.

I hesitate to scan the whole place because the previous owners were bad about dropping pull-tabs everywhere. :P

However, the house was owned by a bootlegger in it's early days :o , so a better detector is on the wish list.

Big M,

give it a go. Never know what you will find.

Plus, it's right outside the door; after years and
years I'm still spending time on my property looking
for things. Not much left, but I learned that a property
is never hunted out. Pull something new up every year,
that I missed in the past. Free half hour, out the front
door and give it a swing.

have a good un......

I'm with Sherm on this one. I still hunt my yard frequently and still finding goodies. My house was built in 1863 and so far in the last couple of years I've found about 35 coins and still counting. You never know whats there until you do!!!

Give it a go....like Davisdog replied...the yard may have had fill brought in...however..where was the fill brought in from?(An old civil war site, revolutionary war site, old playground etc.) Never discount any place until you've at least tried it once. Older properties hold more potential for obvious reasons, but the newer lots can be productive as well....flip side of having fill brought in is that they may have REMOVED fill and gotten down to some really old ground...you just never know so its worth a shot. The odds say there won;t be alot of old stuff there, however the odds say people won;t win the lottey and they do! :) Besides, if you let the high odds in this hobby talk you out of places too much, you;d never take your detector out of the box, and you;d miss out on something great finds!! So go for it...may just be alot of clad and trash...but then (which is wonderful about this hobby)...who know's?? :)
HH!!!
