Found this brass item a few years ago and have not had much success getting an ID on it. It was found at an early house site in the SC Lowcountry that was dual occupied during the civil war. The only mark I can find that would be attributed to an attaching mark is an ever so light pit mark on the centered inside of the tab in pic2. As the item is bent at an angle I suspect the item used to be straight.

Have no idea what it is, but that has to be one of the coolest relics I've seen posted.

Could it have been a spoon? Is it broken on the thin end?

Not broken on the thin end. Even checked it with a jeweler's loop. If anything the other end of the item looks irregular but not broken or torn. If it was broken from the large end someone (back then) would have smoothed it out as both ends are smooth and have patina over them. One thing I have observed about brass is that once broken, even into the patina stage the brass or bronze will retain the jagged edge. This item has no jagged edges. Also this item pretty thick for a "spandle".

If the one end had not been bent slightly off center I would think the bend was intentional and guess a money clip, but again too heavy.

Oh by the way...

Same site, same day, I dug this counter struck Liberty Cap large cent and a thick 26 MM button back with Hammond Turner sons bm.

Never found the button face. That face is out there and it haunts me.

The Liberty cap was too pocket worn to pull a date. Never was able to figure out what D.M. B stood for.

I'd have to see it on a bayonet frog to call it that. I have found about three bayonet frog clips, and each time I've searched for a pic on the net for whatever reason, it's always the same type attached. I'm sure you've found them and know what I mean. Looks similar to the one posted here but no design, and has two spots on the back that were attached to leather.

PS... The site mine was found did give up a sword pommel within several feet.
