Did my weekly run to the same branches I check every week to pick up penny, nickel, and half dollar bags from their coin machine. No half dollar bags but plenty of pennies.

Branch #1
1 - $200 bag of nickels
4 - $50 bags of pennies (apparently most of these came in one batch brought in by some kids so I am hoping they aren't presearched...)

Branch #2
no bags

Branch #3
1 - $200 bag of nickels
3 - $50 bags of pennies

Went through the 2 bags of nickels

Totals from Branch #1 $200 nickel bag (the first half of the bag seemed searched as very few pre-1960 coins showed up)

I will update on the penny bags later, though I am sure I won't be done with most of them until next week as I am headed to my parent's house this weekend for the Minnesota fishing opener (tradition). Heading up Thrusday night and hoping to do some CRHing in their area for halves and possibly some MDing at my grandparents house on Friday (weather permitting).

Nice finds, especially with the war nickels and the dateless buffie. What were those pennies doing commingling with the nickels? Have fun CRHing in new territory. Doing so always gets me excited. And I hope the weather is good for MDing.

Good job on the nicks GMan! Gotta love gettin those proofs. Good luck on the pennies, and good luck on the fishing. My brother says that opening of fishing season is a big deal up there, with the governor and media out covering the thing. What is it that everyone goes after Walleye or Pike?? Anyhow, good luck!

WTG! I wish I could hunt for other coins but I get bad headaches
when I do. Maybe its time to invest in a good magnification light.

Only had time to go through 1 bag of pennies tonight,

It was an okay bag, but nothing great.
13 wheat pennies (1936-D, 1939, 1942, 1942-D, 1944, 1944-D, 1948-D, 1950, 1953-D(2), 1954-D(2), 1956-D)

19 Canadian (1963, 1964, 1967, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997(2), 1998, 2000)

The rest of the bags will have to wait until Sunday night at the earliest and most likely at least Monday night.

Yes, its quite popular, almost like a holiday. I forget what percentage of Minnesotans they figure at least put a line in the water on the opening weekend: 1/4, 1/3, or 1/2. Either way, lotsa boats. And usually its a good time with decent fishing, though there have been some years when its been downright nasty weather: 35-40 degrees with 20-30 mph winds, even seen an occasional snow flake or two. I think its supposed to be decent this year though, weather wise. We'll see on Saturday as its still to far away to trust the weatherman.

And yes the most common prey is walleye on the "opener". Technically the "opener" is just the start of the "walleye" season. There are some fish which you can fish all year round, and others which have other start dates like bass and muskelunge. (those "openers" do not have the big tradition tied to them.)

$1.25 per roll for pre 1983???

Tell me more... Where can you get $1.25 per roll? Any mix of pre 1983?

Gman - what can I say that I haven't already said......repeat-amazing! It still baffles me on the amount of coins you go through.

WTG!!

kasteer, I don't think anyone has ever cashed in on pre-82 pennies---yet. Despite the melting ban, some people are speculating there'll be a market in the future.

Gman, nice find on the proof. Still waiting for my first proof nickel. HH!

you should save the 1982 and older cents too. those are worth $1.25 a roll now! :o

Only problem with that is if I did I would have a lot of pre-1983 pennies and no money to search for something of value today. For example, if I get an average of 500 pre-1983 pennies per 2500 (box worth), then for this week I should end up with 7000 pre-1983 pennies or $70 worth. I can't afford to put $70 of pennies I can't sell away each week. There are better ways for me to invest my money, for now.

That being said, I do keep the low mintage and early memorials which I average about 26.4 per 2500 and just in 2007 I have 3127 of them with 25000 pennies yet to search at home. If I had kept all my pre-1983 pennies (at 500 per box) I would have approx. $600 worth of pennies that I can't sell for over face, probably for years if not decades. That same $600 could be used to buy half dollars in which I have been averaging about 9.5 silver halves per box (in boxes and bags combined).

In my case my 9.5 silver halves are broken down as 2.7 - 90%/box and 6.8 - 40%/box on average

Now say I roll over my $600 once each week, sell all silver halves for $1.50 for 40% and $3.75 for 90%. For week one I will gain $27.72. But if I keep doing this week after week, after 52 weeks I will now be rolling over $6004 in halves each week. If I kept my pennies even if I could sell them for copper melt I would still only have max $1500 ($600 * 2.5), but most likely after a year they would still only be worth $600.

Now granted the halves strategy would require the percentages to continue as they have been and to sell and reinvest all profits into it weekly, but I would rather employ that strategy than save pennies.

I finished one more penny bag tonight
18 wheat pennies (1937-D, 1942, 1944-S(2), 1945(2), 1945-D, 1946-S, 1947-D, 1948-D, 1949-D, 1950, 1954-D, 1955-D, 1956, 1957-D(3))
20 Canadian (1955, 1961, 1966, 1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976(3), 1984, 1986(2), 1987(3), 1988, 1997, 1998, 1999)

And the 1937-D is a Red-Brown AU. Probably one of the sharpest pre-1941 wheaties I have found.

Tomorrow is my coin pickup day so I guess I will have to double time it this week to catch up.... :P Depending of course on what is available when I go to pick stuff up.

Question regarding canadian coins... Are they worth anything????

Most of them..no. I started picking them out as a kid because they were different and have been doing so since. I believe the pennies made before the year XXXX (someone else will know the year) were made of a higher percentage of copper and so you could argue that they are worth saving for the copper. Similar to the pre-1982 US cents, except there is no melting ban on Canadian coins in the US that I know of. The pre-1968 Canadian dimes, quarters, and halves were silver and some of the 1968 ones too.

And with almost any country's coins, there are rarer ones that are worth something. I haven't see a recent price guide nor have I investigated it completely, but for now I just keep 'em all. Might try to go for a roll set of each of those too, haven't decided yet, for now 1 each is the goal. I can't remember the last box of pennies or nickels I have purchased which didn't contain at least 1 Canadian coin, may never have happened with the exception of boxes of coins fresh from the mint.

the best was to see if the 1968 canadian coins are silver is to put a magnet up to it. if its silver, it won't stick.

I save all of the Canadian coins that come from rolls and bags and the reject tray of the coin counter at the bank.

Drove up to Canada this past weekend and took along my mini-hoard. I had accumulated some $140.00 in Canadian coinage. That was the good news. The bad new was that the banks and credit unions wouldn't take them unless they were wrapped and I had an account.

However I did find a wonderful coin shop and the owner was happy to exchange 45.00 in nickels, dimes and quarters for 3 pair of silver earrings and a silver pin for my wife. The rest was in $2.00 & $1.00 coins and those were easy to spend.

Went through 2 of the remaining 5 more bags of pennies over the last couple of days.

Bag 1
5 wheat pennies (1920, 1942, 1948-S, 1951-S, 1954-D)

24 Canadian (1941, 1942, 1956, 1957, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1975(2), 1977(2), 1978(2), 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985(2), 1989, 1998)

Bag 2
13 wheat pennies (1934, 1939, 1944, 1946-D, 1946-S, 1947-D, 1950(2), 1953, 1956-D(3), 1957-D)

33 Canadian (1951, 1956, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1981(3), 1982, 1983(2), 1985, 1986(3), 1987(2), 1988, 1989(2), 1990(3), 1992, 1993(2), 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999(2))

3 more $50 bags of pennies left from this batch. Just made my typical Tuesday run for this week. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up this week, but I doubt it. I will post the results of the other three bags when I finally get them done.

Thanks for the update, Gman. You're a real coin hopper. I hope the next bag is full of keepers.

Finally got to one of the last 3 bags from this bunch last night.

9 wheat pennies (1942-D, 1944, 1945, 1946-D, 1952-D, 1953-D(2), 1954-D, 1958-D)

23 Canadian (1943, 1950, 1953, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1973(2), 1975, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981(2), 1983(2), 1989, 2000, 2001)

The 1950 Canadian cent was my first for 2007 and with that I now have found all Canadian cents from 1937-2006 except 1937, 1939, 2001-P, and 2006-P and as I understand it the 2006-P is very rare. The 2001-P might be too, but I am not sure. I also have found a 1932 and 1935. Note I haven't found all varieties, but I have found both the 1947 and the 1947 maple leaf.

I should finish at least one of the other two bags tonight. Granted with my stop over the weekend I still have 5 bags of pennies left and tomorrow is pickup day... ;D
