This weekend's antiques score
Recent picks from the $5 bin. I think I did well:
The pocket watch is busted, but the brand - Burns & Gosser - has some cachet among collectors since it's an old private label that apparently used good movements. I think it will do well over the $5 I paid for it since people do collect them and they are scarce. Possible bidding war material. I think I'll put it up with a dollar start and see what happens.
The brass relief is a bit of a mystery. It is about 5x7" in a larger wood frame wrapped in very dis colored green felt. The back is plastered over with hand painted wallpaper/canvas, and has a hanging eyelet fastened with some very old looking nails. Unfortunately, the detail on the figures in the relief is quite bad. I believe it is quite old - late 19th Century-ish - but some kind of novelty item from the period, obviously produced in quantity.
The only visible clue to its origin is a weak stamp reading "BOURDON" or "BOURDUN" on the house in the background. I want to peel the backing off and have a look, but it is so old the corner totally crumbled when I tried to lift it. I think curiosity will get the better of me, since higher quality reliefs of a similar type that I have been able to find on eBay do not go for more than $150 or so. Still, any help with ID, even just what this type of art is called, would be appreciated.
I almost passed over the small watch brooch, but saw that the back had been engraved and that the craftsmanship was quite good. Worth $5 in my book. Trying to find the sweet spot to leverage the case back off and have a look at the movement, but it is being stubborn. Might have to take it to someone with better tools.
Thanks for looking, happy hunting out there
