Relic Nut and I went to union encampment that we've hit hard in the past and here are some of my finds. I used his AT Pro on sat. because my Tesaro Cibola & I have been arguing and may be time for a divorce! Found couple bullets (& million nails) sunday w/ Cibola but still considering how to get insurance money for it!! I am posting more pics of the smashed bullet w/ brass ? in the top of it over in "whats is it forum". Little cuff button front was toast except the shield is intact. By the way the 2 small cut nails are iron without a speck of rust & they will give a tone better than a button! ....go figure

Great finds! Bullets and buttons are always awesome to dig. The smashed one with brass almost looks like someone took a Kepi hat buckle, bent it in half and shashed it into a bullet. Ha

Those nails have to be brass or copper

Nope, they're iron

I made the comment to Relic Nut when I found them something to the effect...."how in the hell can you find these tiny cut nails at 4 to 6" or so without any rust what-so-ever!!". I think he just grunted then proceeded to dig another button! damnails!

At least they're "rare nails"

I think there must be something wrong with your magnet lol

Found one just like that just assumed it was copper it is in my display I'm going to have to test it with a magnet now

I've actually found some iron like that before. Its not too common, but appears to be in areas where the soil is very black. I actually just dug a really nice iron key that was in my post a from last weekend... I had to run it under my coil to make sure it wasn't brass. There was no oxidation (rust) on it at all. It seems that the rose head nails I find also come out with hardly any oxidation, while the square nails seem to have more. So its either the dirt they're in, or the composition of the iron (maybe a higher carbon content or something)

Can still buy square nails at local hardware by the box full...
I meant, nobody knows what they are so must be rare. Sarcastic remark to my buddy.
