This horsehead (?) with what I call 'evil ears' button was dug at a colonial home site of a man named Henry S.

Hard to find out much about Henry but I did learn that he fought in the battle of Oriskany and took a musketball across the cheek but survived.

I have never found anything out about it. Is it a regiment button, livery,or just a decorative civilian button ?

It's a livery button, as indicated by the torse or bandeau ("twist") at the bottom, and is probably late 18th or early 19th century. Livery buttons were worn by uniformed employees (coachmen, footmen, etc.) and generally bore a device from the employer's famly coat of arms. Here's a link to a bit more info and photos:

Nice Livery button, one of my favourite types of button. 1790-1830 often have a backmark to narrow it down.

PBK you ROCK !

I had a hard time with this one.
The "twist" underneath had me going. Back in 2004 I dug a Contienintal Army light dragoon button , horse and rider , that also has the rope twist as the 'ground'. SO I thought maybe the two were related

Considering I dug it at Heny S's home site and the most recent coin dug at the site was a Lg Cent / 1805 we felt after that year activity there ended.
Have yet to find out what happened to Henry and his home, Ground isnt charred ,rules out fire, I think one day he was simply out shootin at some food and outta the ground came a bubblin crude, oil that is---Texas tea , and he moved to Beverly...Hills that is :D

Thanks again for the quick CSI speed identify !!

No marks of any sort on the back Crusader , Just the smushed spot of solder where the shank once was.

Thanks for the look/see reply ;)

Take care !
