Going through some finds from my Girlfriends parents house. Built in the 1800's farm house in Shippensburg PA. Not sure what this is. At first I thought Railroad Spike but its a little over 9 inches long, flat on one side rounded on the other and flat on top. I took photos with my ruler ( sorry for all the metal detecting rust on it) Any Ideas what or how old this sucker is? It is Iron and has some weight to it. The top looks worked pretty hard.

I'm with stone splitting tools also. The flat wedge I believe is called a feather and the round tappered is called a plug that be pounded in a drilled hole done with a hand steel to initiate a fracture the wedges would further work apart.

Looks awful big to be a stone feather. Saw some granite being split one time on This Old House. The feathers and wedges they used were no more than 3" long and only about 1/4"(?) thick. Something that size would require a much larger hole to accommodate not only the feather, but the 2 wedges as well.

I'd tend to go with Bruce on this - I think tent stake, also.

A mighty big tent to use that size. I would lean toward the stone tool

Like I said, carnival tent, circus tent, church revival tent, not a Coleman camping tent.

Actually I'm wrong about that . It's to short for a large tent. And why the rounded then flat side. Most of the old large tents used wooden stakes. If newer the steel ones would be longer
