In this post I have tried to put together items that I categorize under the "relic" title. This will include some military items, musket parts, belt buckles, shoe buckles, childrens minitures, horse bridal rosettes, boot toe plates and heal plates, and petal and crotal bells. Most of the items in these pictures were located this year, although some of the bells posted come from the past few years also. The items go back as far as the revolutionary war and up to the early 1900's. I hope you enjoy the pictures. Next post will be all about buttons. Thanks for looking....Lance

What are those bell looking things in the second picture. I found one once but havent figured out what exactly it is. Great stuff by the way.
Hey GoldFever. They are bells. The ones on the top left are petal bells or crotal bells. They were used on animals such as sheep, goats, and cows. Some of the brass ones bo back to the 1700's. There are also a lot of sleigh bells and other bells that I have found. Hope that answers your question. Thanks...Lance

Fantastic finds Lance! You should have waited awhile before posting such a great display of years finds, LOL, Winter has just started and it will be a long one, always is. HH, Mike

When is the museum opening?

Totally awesome finds! Hey, Comfy! I'm from the south and we do not know these things but how do you tell sleigh bells from the other bells? When I first saw your bell finds I thought they were all sleigh bells. Have really enjoyed seeing your stuff.

Lance - what are the half round items in the third pic?

Thanks Rabajohn, Sleigh bells were attached to a leather strip by a rivet at the top of the bell. The crotal or petal bells have a round or square tab at the top with a hole in it. It was attached to a collar on the animal, much like a bell on a cats collar. Thanks for asking.

Hey AK. The half round items are boot toe plates. They were used on the boot toe to protect it as it was put through the stirrup I believe. These were used in the mid 1800's through the civil war. Thanks for asking...Lance

Awesome display of finds Lance. Congrats on the great year.
