I found this one the other night at an old battle site. Wasn't really that deep either maybey 4-5 ". It has no numerical value that I can tell, But it coin shaped and about the size of a quarter and very thin. It says "pot max inv caes maximilianus 1497" Hard to imagine it is that old but? on the back it has a small rectangle with a circle around it. Is it a coin? or some sort of a comemorative thing? Any ideas are well appreciated. Thanks guys HH

Ok I added apicture of the back. As you can see it doesn't seem to mean much. I found the large cent really close to it. I just put it there for comparison (and to gloat a little) I have alot or large cents but this one is particularly in nice condition. So If the circle and rectangle mean anything to anyone please let me know. I also found this pin It is a canadian govenor general foot guard pin. Not woth much but pretty nice.

Hello someguypeter, please post a picture of the reverse. It appears to be Italian, whatever it is.

Type in on Google the following: guide to the leon kolb collection of portraits.

Read the sites information. Sorry that's as far as I could get.

Yea... this one is a little tougher than most... I didn't get too far.

That LC is gorgeous - very nice find! The pin is interesting. As for the first item, still haven't a clue but I do think that seeing the reverse of anything up for ID can be helpful. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be "crude" enough to be a coin from the 15th century. This thing is very precisely made, lots of detail. Maybe a souvenir from Genoa? (I say Genoa only because of the guy's hat.)

old latin (italian) translated (very roughly)----(pox)=estate (max)=mus (anv)=IMP (caes) =caes<er> miaxilianus 1497---hope this helps somewhat---what it is I have no idea however---good luck----fully phrasing ---estate most imperial caeser maxilianus 1497---Ivan

I'm guessing the date is actually 1493 and the coin/token/pin commemorates Maximilian the 1st of Austria becoming the Holy Roman emperor. Anyone who's into Roman coins would probably recognize the inscription. For a little history, here's a link http://nygaard.howards.net/files/3/2810.htm
If the inscription follows Roman coins, POT MAX is probably an abbreviation for Pontifex Maximus, which is the title for the head of the board of priests who directed the state religion. Many Roman emperors carried this title and printed a form of it on their coinage. INV would be Invictus, meaning unconquered and Caes of course would be Caesar

good show---was rough guessing---you seem better versed than me on this subject---- mine was just kind of rough guess from basic latin type translation. to try and help assist in hunting down more info. good job----Ivan

You might try emailing the person who posted to this forum:

Doesn't look like they ever received a response on the forum, but maybe someone emailed some info?
