sorry nick, i borrowed your topic:) thats why i put a period in your post 8)
duffy, you seem to have alot of knowledge with marbles, maybe you can help me out here. here are some marbles i have found over the years, from 1800's mining camps( the large clay one) to 1950's dumps. most are pretty beat up, but im just curious if there are any in this lot that is somewhat rare or interesting, as for value, like i said, most are beat up.. i have no clue of marbles, except not to leave them in the field. my fav is the clay with white dots, although im sure its impossile to identify, was found in a 1800's mining camp. any info is appreciated.

alley marbles was made by lawrence alley....he was a machinist who made and perfected the machines ...he had factories in pennsboro-st marys-stistersville and salem wv...he also made the machine that packaged plastic bags of marbles doing away with the mesh burlap type bags....imho hes the man who made wv marbles industry in the forefront....he used recycled glass from wv glass factories......alley mibs are classed as wv swirls and you can tell which location they were made from by the differences in the base glass....

Nice marbles chong2 and it's great to learn from the Masters like duffytrash.

I now know why we used to call them 'alleys' when we were kids.
Very cool.

chong thats a bennington ....the "eyes" on the mib are from sitting next to another marble when beign salt glazed...some were made in germany and shipped here some believe as ballast in ships to new england and unloaded and sold as a by-product thas the reason they were glazed so the water wouldnt soak into it and add weight.......that theory is not proved...it couldve been made in akron ohio by american toy manufactures there in the 1880s to the teens then glass took over ....if you google akron marbles there will be some info there by brian graham....

Interesting finds from an old sixth grade marble champ! l had one just like the yellow and black one. It was my shooter or taw and we called it a bumblebee. Of course back then as kids we just had pretty marbles and ugly marbles. :D Had no idea they were anything special. Excellent! Monty
