All Treasure Hunting
It was in the 70's today, so I killed a few hours at an old house close by. Nothing really too exiting as far as treasures, but an assortment anyways. The bottles and crystal lid was found buried about a foot deep in the old outhouse. I dug down about 4 feet in the center of the outhouse hoping to find a coin, but nothing. Didn't folks drop coins when they dropped their drawers in those days? ???
Inside the house, I peeled back four layers of linoleum in ONE ROOM until I finally made it to the wooden floor. Again, nothing of value, but I thought it was pretty interesting to see all the different patterns (eras) the room went through. Not one coin did I find inside. Only old chewed up clothes and about 20 styles of shoes. Off to the playgrounds tomorrow. In the 70's again. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. ;D

looks like a great spot. there just has to be some coins there. i would give it another try or two. ;)

Look's like a great site MM....Any chance's of pulling up a few board's....Gotta be some goodie's there somewhere!!Liike Red said,Hit it again....HH!!

Looks like a great site. I usually have by best luck right at the front door step...people fumbled in and out of pockets for a key and dropped coins. Looks like it also has great potential for a bottle dump.

I pulled a lot of boards and chimney bricks, but no hidden treasures. I have to be careful, because the house is leaning, the floors are buckled up, and one chimney has toppled already. I'm afraid if I pull the wrong piece out, you may be MD'ing me out one day. :D
I'm kind of new at this old house treasure hunting thing. Any other tips or secret spots I could check?
There is a house, two outbuildings, a barn, and an outhouse on the property.
Where have some of you folks found hidden items in these old places?
Thanks.

Try looking up in the rafter's in the barn,outbuilding's....And if you feel really brave hit the "privy".....Good luck!!

This is not from personal experience, but from reading a lot of posts on this subject. Here are some possible spots to check:

1. Tops of each door frame. Sometimes people placed coins here.

2. Outside the bedroom windows. Old timers liked to keep an eye on their money.

3. If there is still furniture inside, move these. There may be treasures underneath.

4. Just under the front edge of the porch

5. At the base of the chimney outside.

6. Look for an area where a clothesline may have been hung. Check for old trees that are close together (say 20') and check heavily in a straight line between them.

7. Look for an area where they may have buried trash and garbage. Usually good for more bottles and plates.

8. Path between the outhouse and the main house.

This house looks to be fairly old. Be careful inside. I think you have enough here to keep you busy for quite some time. Best of luck and hope to see some good posts soon.

HH.

VERY COOL FINDS , I LIKE THE BOTTELS . GOOD LUCK FIND MORE TREASURE AT THE HOUSE THERE ;D

What an adventure filled spot you got yerself there MM! 8) Are there any doors still left hangin' anywhere? If there are, are they hollow? If they are, give them a swing, shake or sharp raps or whatever to determine if there is anything inside them. Sometimes there would be a slot about an inch and a half long and about a 1/8 inch wide cut out of the top of the door, where coins would be dropped to land inside, safe and sound along the inside bottom of that door bank, just waitin' for you.

Any light switches left on the walls? If there are, take them off and look inside for any string or wire hanging down from a nail or whatever that could be attached to an old Prince Albert can or whatever. Reach around in there for at least as far as your arm can go in all directions. ;)

Oh ya, don't forget to check the floor (bare ground or straw covered hopefully) in the barn. Very popular spot for the last man of the house or grandpaw as well, to spend lots of his own quality time for many years. 8) A jar or two even of goodies could be under your very feet. Worth a workout with your detector at least, I think.

Just wondering if you've ever read a little book by Glenn Carson called Cache Hunting? This man tells all...Gets you into the minds of the stashers of the past, as well as many killer spots to try in and out of buildings. It's a terrific cache hunting bible for anyone that has a spot like you are having the privledge of hunting. 8)

Thanx for sharing some of your cool adventures with us all! Great post Modern Miner. :)

Old household dumps can be a real treasure trove, as well as just plain interesting to learn about the times and the family that lived there. And the lady of the house usually liked to have a little money of her own. So I recommend looking for a chicken coop. She would usually get the eggs every morning and would sometimes stash a few coins in the coop...away from the hubby. Also, some old items that were associated with raising chickens can bring in some money when sold. Look for an egg scale, a water can, a tin feed bin, things like that. Antiquers like that kind of stuff. Good luck and have fun!

THANKS ALL -
Thanks for the great tips. The house is very old, and the doors are solid boards. There are some light switches though I think (?). That idea of hanging a tin can on a string is a neat idea. I will look for that. You can bet I'll be buying that book "Cache Hunting" that you suggested too. I just love that stuff, and I have a lot to learn.
There is a large barn with dirt floors, and a huge pile of hay on one side. Also, what appears to be an old chicken coop like you mentioned. Someone has thrown an old couch and chair in there. It is all torn up. I search both for coins, but nothing. Only a piece of paper with a 1954 date on it. I found the old trash dump too. Just haven't had time to dig it yet.
I still can not find a way into the attic area. I see no place, inside or out, where there would have been access to that area. I can look up from inside the house along the chimney & see the tin roof above. There is a lot of attic space, but no access. I may have to just rip out my own entry, I guess.
I searched an old house once years ago, and my heart was racing when I found a lone tin can (pork) up in an attic space just inside the entry hatch. Nothing else up there but that can. Unfortunately, it only had dust in it, no coins. Darn. It was exciting to find it there anyways.
I'll keep trying.
I really felt like an idiot when I was detecting inside of the old outhouse. My detector was beeping like crazy around the lower side of the outside. I thought I had found a buried treasure. After digging, and digging, I discovered that there was a sheet of old tin on the OUTSIDE of the outhouse. DUH!!! It was so old and dirty, I didn't even know it was metal. Let that be a lesson to you boys and girls. :)
Happy hunting.
