You heard me correctly: I found 446 milligrams of genuine sterling silver today. That's nearly half a gram! Won't be long now before my metal detector pays for itself!
Here's the treasure, feast your eyes:
Oh and it's worth mentioning that the silver is the weird looking thing at the top of the picture.. the 5 communist dollars next to it was just for scale. Now believe it or not, this once in a lifetime find was purely by accident. Wasn't even detecting at the time. This was an elusive "eyeball" find, as it were.
Now maybe you're wondering how I managed to see this thing, and what exactly this oddly-shaped, sterling silver curiosity actually is. Well, I'll kill two birds with one stone in the next picture:
I saw an odd, almost opalescent shimmer coming off the dirt as I was grilling. I thought it was some sort of strange beetle, and since I had no intention of sharing my steak that day, I went over to defend my meal. I realized however that it wasn't an insectoid intruder, so I pried it from the soil and realized it was a glass bead. On my next trip inside, I rinsed it off in the sink and saw the "925" stamp on the metal ring in the center. I was literally in the process of saying, "hey, I found silver!" when the bead broke in half between my fingers. It wasn't too disappointing because I have no use for beads but plenty of use for unadulterated sterling.
Which reminds me: the fact that it was there right on the surface blows my mind, because a few months before, I found another sterling bead with my detector just about two feet away that had the same hallmark as this one does. As you can imagine I meticulously went over that spot, over and over and over and not so much as a poptab was found in the vicinity. The fact that there was a second bead makes me wonder if there's a whole bracelet out there.. hmm.. Here's the one I found a few months ago; I ended up giving it to my mother the next time I saw her because she collects them, and for some reason I've never felt compelled to wear a charm bracelet.
Just goes to show you that you can't ever truly "hunt a place out", and despite your best efforts, you'll always miss something. If you remain dedicated to the cause, you may just find a whopping 446 milligrams of sterling silver someday. Keep that in mind next time you've been out digging up beer caps and zinc pennies for 13 hours. This will all pay off.. someday..
Peace.
