Great looking finds there :icon_thumright: Where's a pic of the porcelain doll head :icon_scratch:
What period would you say the privy dated from the start? :dontknow:

Re: This is the "Pits"

I'd say you were in deep $hit buddy ! Great bottles ! Argentium.

Re: This is the "Pits"

Nice, love privy digging myself. Gotta love those blob tops and Hutches. Hutches are probably my favorite type bottle to find when I'm diggin the privy sites :icon_thumleft:

Re: This is the "Pits"

The guy in the pictures is my digging partner Don. Never dig alone :o Just too dangerous at times. And I am one ugly dude so you might not want to see me in the pics. ;D The pit started out at around 1900 with the Crown Tops, slowly went back to the the 1890's with the tooled tops and the Blobs and Hutches. As far as the Doll head goes, I will get ya pics of that too. Don took all the finds to clean them up a bit. I need to post the marbles as well. Most pits here are Late 1800's. But every now and then we stumble upon an 1870's 1880's one. They are fun to dig, tiring and most of all I never get skunked :D Thanks for the replies guys. Goodluck out there and be safe. jgas

Cool finds...but I have to ask..

How do you locate a privy?? They don't smell anymore...is it a logical placement thing??

Thanks for shariing !!

Please be careful...

Re: This is the "Pits"

SgtRock, thanks for the replies guys. As far as locating a privy you need to invest in a spring steel probe. Tile probe to some people. I have a six footer and a 3 footer. Shove this into the ground and get a feel for it. You will hit glass and softer dirt. Look for ash at the tip of the probe since most privies had ash placed in them to mask the smell. The dirt that is now in them is just nutrient rich soil. No problems there. If you are familiar with Sanborn Fire Maps, look them up at your local library and look for the oldest maps. They will show the older homes that date back to the 1800's when privies were in use. I have to say that getting the first privy found with the probe is the hardest. Then most others are easier. Look on line for spring steel probes. They cost around $40 bucks. Get yourself some shovels, a bucket and rope, a rake and a strong back and let the dirt fly. There are more than just ants and dirt in the ground, those are antiques that you will bring to the light for the first time in over 100 plus years. Let me know if ya need any more tips. I am happy to let ya in on some secrets. Goodluck and be safe out there. jgas
