Hi all. My brother and I had the strangest thing happen to us in the last couple of days and I really debated on whether or not I was gonna tell anyone because it is just so damn weird to me lol.

Ok, my brother and I both bought detectors in the ealry spring. We did alot of detecting and found some really neat coins and tokesn and artifacts. So on through the summer we go having a great time when my brothers co-worker tags along with us one day and becomes interested in metal detecting.

So my brother sells this guy a tesoro cibola relatively cheap and the guy has some success. He was finding the occasional wheat penny and lotsa clad. So after my brother sold him the cibola my brother purchased a minelab x50. So this guy sees us digging older stuff and really wants a detector with a meter on it. I told him that a meter will not really make a difference until he learns the tones and intricasies of any given detector. So he goes out and buys a BH quickdraw II.

Fast forward a few weeks and this guy is pulling huge quantities of silver and other old coins out of the ground. My brother and I were shocked. He went from finding very little to finding really great amounts of stuff in little over a month or so. I told him to enjoy it as most people know in metal detecting you have a good hot streak then its followed by a longer cold streak.

Well it came to our attention that this guy was planting coins he bought from another coworker and claiming he found them. It got a little suspitious when he "found" a pocket spill of 2 silver quarters 2 mercury dimes and an indian head penny. All the coins looked like they were popped out of a coin book. We held our tounges and didnt say much till the truth came out. When he admitted that he had been planting the coins I lost all respect for him. We took the time to teach him and get him through the dry periods with encouragment and he tells people we are jealous that he finds more than we do.

I know this story probably sounds confusing...and it really is confusing to me....my question is....and i dont think there is an answer....but ill try it anyways.

Why would someone "fake" metal detecting? This guy was actually digging huge holes to make it appear he actually found this stuff. He admitted he lied about it and cant understand why my brother and I got mad. When my brother and I go out detecting we get excited when either of us find even a wheat cent. Not that they are that great but we just love to find them and older stuff. This guy has always been welcome with us and mentored by us and he basically gives us a big F.U. Tell me this isnt the weirdest $hit you ever heard of haha.

Ryan,

Hearing things like this makes me both angry and very sad at the same time.
I am angry that the guy would feel the need to deceive anyone
and I am sad that someone you thought was a friend would go and foul up a friendship with shenanigans like that. sorry it happened to you Buddy.

no integrity :-\

??? Ryan, s^%$ happens, sorry it was a friend that did that to you. I guess it takes all kinds to make up this big old world we live in. Its a shame...... We even have some of those people right here on Tnet! HH and don't let it slow you or your brother down.

Ryan, this guy feels the need to be accepted and if he "finds" some neat stuff he thinks he will be be on a equal footing with you guys. I am sorry some people feel this way, but many do.

The same goes for the few that take a few of last years rings to the beach and claim they found them when talking to other Th'ers at the beach to make themselves important. Some even exaggerate their finds count as if we'd care........

It's important not to brag, but when you get lucky that day ya gotta tell someone after a spell of nothing.

That guy was all about being #1 and getting attention.
There have been post on here b4 asking why people detect. Most of us are out there due to the interest we have in history or coin collecting, ect
I tell people that if you are going to get into this hobby to get rich quick you are in for a sad suprise.I go out and some days i get skunked and other days i do good.If im really lucky i will find some old coins or relics. But no matter what it is the excitement of what the next target may be.
I would like to say that at least you and your brother can be proud that you took the time to try and show him the correct way to do things. It is his fault that he is a liar not yours.

He obviously has missed the whole point of detecting..the thrill of finding the coin or relic itself, not the thrill of showing a find off. Always nice to share a nice find and be excited about it. However the REAL thrill is finding it in the hole or as you sift away the dirt and see that sweet find show itself....THAT is the true thrill of detecting and he obviously thinks more of the showing off of a find as being more of a thrill...too bad, for he's missed the boat big time on the real joys of this hobby. Its always nice to be in a position to gloat a little or to rib your friends some over a find, for that is the comradiere of detecting with friends and makes for healthy competition. I enjoy seeing my hunting buddies find an awesome find as much as I would enjoy finding it myself, but none of us would "fake" a find just to get in some digs on the others and is sad that some people feel the need to do so.

Some people just need to lie to make themselves look good, no matter what they're bragging about. I was once told to listen to 100% of what people say and only believe about 50% of it. I think that 50% should be more like 20% ::).

It is all about being lazy. People who cheat have no real desire to master something and are too lazy or stupid. I have played sports all my life along with fishing and hunting. I have never once thought about cheating because for me, there is no satisfaction in it. Or lied about a fish I caught or a buck I shot. As soon as this guy wanted an upgrade right away, it was obvious he did not have the patience or the respect of this great hobby. Anyone can get lucky the first time out but you have to work hard to be consistant. I found some nice coins and I know some of them, anyone could have found. But, there were some with difficult signals and deeper depths that I dug knowing someone passed this one up because of the mixed signals and left it for trash. Be rid of him and enjoy your hobby with your brother.

Unfortunately people like that turn up pretty often , if you've ever
done any online gaming you will find people who will do anything
or pay any amount of money to hack or cheat in game to make themselves feel important. The good thing is they are pretty easy to spot :)

Sounds like he felt like he needed some acceptance from you and your brother... and finding the "good stuff" was the only way he thought he could get it. I'm sure in his mind, he just thought if he was finding some really good coins, you'd maybe respect him as being a better MDer than he probably thought you did already. A good place to get him hooked on is T-Net... because on here, he'll get all the acceptance he needs if he's showing his finds, regardless how small or big. Maybe you should consider confronting him on it in a nice way and try and get him on here and explain the importance of being upfront with your "actual" finds.

it really is sad.... maybe you could play it off though,, i mean if he's really a friend, do stuff like detect him before you hit the fields and things like that,, he prob just wants your friendship..

Sounds like a Seinfeld episode. The one about the guy in the tennis shop, who was faking like he could really play tennis and he got Jerry to go along with him for awhile. The guy was faking it in order to impress women. What's your guy's excuse? That's some silly behavior. Dump the a--hole.

There's a phase that has to do with trying to do what you do is the most sincere form of flattery. Poor soul has no self esteem.
