Hi all. My brother and I had the strangest thing happen to us in the last couple of days and I really debated on whether or not I was gonna tell anyone because it is just so damn weird to me lol.
Ok, my brother and I both bought detectors in the ealry spring. We did alot of detecting and found some really neat coins and tokesn and artifacts. So on through the summer we go having a great time when my brothers co-worker tags along with us one day and becomes interested in metal detecting.
So my brother sells this guy a tesoro cibola relatively cheap and the guy has some success. He was finding the occasional wheat penny and lotsa clad. So after my brother sold him the cibola my brother purchased a minelab x50. So this guy sees us digging older stuff and really wants a detector with a meter on it. I told him that a meter will not really make a difference until he learns the tones and intricasies of any given detector. So he goes out and buys a BH quickdraw II.
Fast forward a few weeks and this guy is pulling huge quantities of silver and other old coins out of the ground. My brother and I were shocked. He went from finding very little to finding really great amounts of stuff in little over a month or so. I told him to enjoy it as most people know in metal detecting you have a good hot streak then its followed by a longer cold streak.
Well it came to our attention that this guy was planting coins he bought from another coworker and claiming he found them. It got a little suspitious when he "found" a pocket spill of 2 silver quarters 2 mercury dimes and an indian head penny. All the coins looked like they were popped out of a coin book. We held our tounges and didnt say much till the truth came out. When he admitted that he had been planting the coins I lost all respect for him. We took the time to teach him and get him through the dry periods with encouragment and he tells people we are jealous that he finds more than we do.
I know this story probably sounds confusing...and it really is confusing to me....my question is....and i dont think there is an answer....but ill try it anyways.
Why would someone "fake" metal detecting? This guy was actually digging huge holes to make it appear he actually found this stuff. He admitted he lied about it and cant understand why my brother and I got mad. When my brother and I go out detecting we get excited when either of us find even a wheat cent. Not that they are that great but we just love to find them and older stuff. This guy has always been welcome with us and mentored by us and he basically gives us a big F.U. Tell me this isnt the weirdest $hit you ever heard of haha.
