hey gang,
I gotta tell you, I WASN'T going to post this.... But then I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one this has happened to. So please let me set it up... I work in a " commission " only sales job and lately it's been tuff, I have also been promoted to " sales lead " recently.... We come to work and we " share " the customers that come in. Meaning I help a customer ( know as a -up-) and then the other salesperson takes the next one and so on and so on. It has been nothing but what we would call " crappy " ups lately ( people looking for small items or just wasting time- never meaning to buy- ). Commision is based off how much profit you get, so if someone is looking for a small priced item you " may " make $2-3. While if the next salesperson gets someone for a $1000-2000 item they stand to make $80-160. For the last 3 weeks I have had nothing but low end customers and it finally got to me last Friday. I walked past the desk of my coworker ( a lady in her 60's and VERY religious ) and said " MAN I am so frustrated with these ups I got just hit something "...... She just giggled a little and then we went on with the day ( nothing out of the ordinary ). The next day the whole crew was working ( we have 4 people at my store including the manager ). I came in still peeved from the ups and explained how frustrated I was. A little later he took me outside and asked what happened yesterday... I was baffled... I told him as far as I knew, nothing. He then said my coworker said to him that she was very scared and almost called 911... I was SHOCKED !!!!! He then told me to make out a statement as to what had happened, and have to him by the next day. He then turned it into HR and we will see what will happen... What did I do wrong ???? I never threatened ANYONE... I may also lose my promotion and be sent to a slower store as punishment....This coworker is EXTREMELY religious and talks about it ALL day... I can't get through just one day without hearing about it ( she believes the earth is only 3000 yrs old because that was says in the Bible ). She is very slow at almost all of her tasks which require me to do extra work everyday. I have had discussions with my boss about her since day 1. Every week and nothing was done, I was told to find a way to make it work. My belief is that the corporation is running scared
and is looking to cover their own end...I'm wondering if I should have a lawyer ( just in case ) to be ready if needed...Has anyone be confronted with a similar situation ??? Any Advice ( look for a new job comes to mind ) ???

Wow, that sucks. I hate back stabbers like her, they're some of the worst people around. Ugh, what a pile of sleaze. I had a similar thing happen to me at work, there was this new chick there who talked behind my back while giggling to my face. >:(

Hi Pegleglooker. Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having. The way things sound about the way things are going at work, maybe you would be better off working somewhere else. It certainly sounds as if you'd make more money even flipping burger at Mickey D's, if you're only making 2 or 3 dollars a sale. Heck, you can find more than that with your detector! Good luck to you, and I hope everything works out for you. :)

I work in a La-z-boy store [ware house] so I don't work on sales commission but I am very familiar with ups and such. I suggest you keep you mouth close whenever she is around. If she starts to talk to you just excuse your self and go the rest room. I she makes any religious comments that offend you - complain to management about her. If she can dish it out she better be prepared to take it..

hey gang,
Thankx for all the feedback, I mentioned that she is religious for one reason. It's all I hear about, I mean your faith is YOUR faith not necessarily mine. I do believe in God, I just don't think I need to talk about it every day ( actions speak louder than words ). Work is not a platform for what you believe. With this in mind I NEVER went any higher with it, because I thought it wasn't needed ( could be handled at the store level ). But my manager is of the same belief and that has issues too.. I guess I'll see what's in store on Thursday when I go back to work.

Thankx again everyone

This was your mistake, in blue in your post, and the lady felt threatened. I hope you get everything resolved and you don't get demoted. Good Luck!

You deserve to work in a religiously neutral environment. Someone peppering you constantly with religious views is contradictory to a harassment free workplace. Just smile at her when she is quoting scripture and then report it to your supervisor.

She has no more right to thrust her personal views on you, as you do on her. Just smile at her and conduct business with her in purely a professional manner discussing work related issues. It's a shame that we all have to be that way, but well... lawyers...

Sorry don't want to get on anyone's bad side but the religion issue is a seperate issue from what YOU did wrong.

When you stated to the woman that you were frustrated and wanted to hit something you created an intimidating enviroment.

Now please read this all the way through. Do I think you were going to hit her? NO. Do I think you were seriously going to hit anyone? NO. But in today's work enviroment with all the shootings at work places and violence between co-workers your boss has received a complaint and has no choice but to act on it.

The BEST advice I can give you is to document EVERYTHING, keep a level head and do NOT blow off any steam around your co-workers. Because even if they like you when asked have you ever seen peg loose his cool and spout off they will have to answer truthfully.

I am speaking from experience here. I almost collided with a woman in the hallway where I work because we were both walking pretty fast and I came around one corner and she came around the other. I tried to yield the right-of-way to her and she didn't even try to move out of the way at all and almost knocked me over. I made the comment "Wow we almost crashed there." and walked away. Never thought anything about it until the next day when my boss called me into the office and told me she had received a complaint that I was threatening a co-worker. Never happened and I cannot see how the above incident could be seen in that light but the woman had a problem at home and took it out on me.

Just be cool and sounds like you need to look for a new job.

hey gang,
Thankx Mastereagle, I do NOT feel that I threatened anyone nor do I feel that I have done anything wrong ( I just think she overreacted ).... But in today's world, that doesn't mean anything. The lawyers and fear run this world. I have worked for this company for over 3 yrs and never had any problems with anyone. I have worked with 3 women during this time and all have told me they would work with again and have ABSOLUTELY no fear ( I know I called ). So now I have to be cautious of the " legal " side of this. I just feel that I have no rights here, I have to be defensive and fearful of " everything " I do. To me, it just means that at anytime, in any situation ( when there are just 2 employees working ) anyone can say what they like, and the other is then in DEEP trouble. If the corporation is not sure of what happened they will at least separate the two and I would be willing to bet the accused will get the short end of the stick... That why I say that this is NOT my world. Maybe it's time to find a cabin in the woods somewhere and hunt for my own food. :D :D :D :D :D

It sounds like a no win situation, PLL.
Sorry.

Especially if woman and boss belong to same club.

Be pleasant as you can, do not place blame on anyone, do not call up other issues.
If asked about event, tell management you were frustrated because of poor sales and certainly did not direct your remark towards ayone, and did not mean to offend anyone, either.
Offer to apologize if the woman mistook that the comment was directed towards her.

Jobs hard to come by.

Whatever you do, do NOT bring her religion into it. That is a no win situation for you. Makes it look like you are trying to shift blame/focus.

Thankx TT,
With my job there is only 2 people on duty during the week and you are not able to leave ( to try to relax ). Because that would leave a woman in the store by herself, and that is not allowed. as is leaving early or coming in late ( dr's appt etc. ). The world is just getting to PC for me.

Here's what I mean:

To Those of You Born
1930 - 1979

At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don't read anything else, please

Read what he said.

Very well stated, Mr. Leno.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside, playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

~

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:
'With hurricanes, tornadoes, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of us...pass this on.

Thankx

Pegleghooker - start looking for another job now.
Before you get "written up" and fired for a made up reason.

I was the "Hero" of several places that I worked at for the first few years, then they can you.
There was a time when companies appreciated their employees but that seems long gone.
I am of the old folks idealism but have had rude awakenings.

thats the exact reason why i work for myself!
Its bad enough a person spends most their life having to go to work everyday.
There has to be something that your good at, and that you like doing that you could possibly make a living at? Think real hard. Im telling you theres nothing better than being your own boss!

Except maybe being your own boss AND finding a Meteorite.

You have two choices. 1. If you have the fortitude (guts) you can go over the boss's head and take the forced fed religious thing a step higher and recommend that SHE be transferred. ( May not work and you will be labeled a trouble maker and get a bad recommendation on your next job) Depending on how far you want to carry it, you may wind up getting a lawyer and sueing, or 2. Talk to your boss and try to get a good recommendation in writing and go job seeking and let her have the joint. Sounds like this job may not be your cup of tea if it frustrates you that much. Sales can be quite lucrative but you have to find the right fit for your personality type. Well, there is a third option, stay put and see what happens and put up with any bs coming your way. It's up to you. Monty
