After looking at it some more the spot on the back where something was attached looks to big to be a button shank. And it looks modern to me I can't find a match but I'll keep looking.

Collar stud ? Any idea if its military or not was about 10 inches deep so how could it be modern ?

IMO... It is not military. It is a fastener off some type some sporting equipment or clothing.

As I said, it is just my opinion. If you turn it with the star at the bottom, the chevrons make a stylized, lower-case 'a'. It might be old and military but I don't think so...
