It's a (bent) drop spindle for spinning yarn.

Looks a little thick to be a spindle.....Is there a little hook/notch at the top....like on the top of a crochet hook?....most spindles have that little notch at the top to catch the yarn...

Dang DCMatt... after finding that freaking Drum Fish throat thing I almost want to believe anything you say, but wouldnt an "iron" spindle be a little much, I mean heavy? I thought they would have been wooden... Can you find a picture of one?

I kept thinking horse picket post... I don't know... :P

How about a large pin for a big hinge on a huge iron gate ?

I do have a little plastic thing that kinda looks like that - to stick in the ground... it keeps my garden hose from getting tangled. :D

I kinda like the lightning rod idea too... but I though they would have been copper or brass?

Once again... i dunno. :-\

I am going to go for the gate pin also...its alittle too thin for a wagon pin, unless its one that kept te sideboards in place (removable) on a buckboard or some type of wagon...

OK, maybe not a spindle. But maybe a bobbin or a distaff. I'd bet it is a part from a spinning wheel.

Then again, it could be a drum fish spear... ;D

Every lightning rod I've ever seen was hollow and made of copper.

A sharpening steel with the abrasive worn or rusted off ? Monty
Yes, I had one that looked very much like yours and it was for sharpening. My handle end was german silver and short like yours and had some writing on it. Is your end silver? Here is the only example I could find:

Can't find a decent picture of a sharpening steel, but they are mostly exactly a foot long and come to a sharp point and is solid steel and heavy as is the what's it. I am guessing it was worn out and discarded where it was left to start rusting away. At some time it looks like someone used it to pry and bent it. It would make a good pry bar in its present conditon. Just a guess, but with some merit. Monty

I'm with you on this one Monty. It is a knife sharpner minus the handle. Way to go!
