Re: This has me Buffalo'd

If it was made only on one side, then its worth quite a bit of money. They pay tons for mistakes. That could be why they made a necklace of it.

looks like a ground off nickel. it was probably ground so they could write on it. can you make out anything? i can't.

Compared to a real Buffalo Nickle, that looks fake. Nothing is right. Very interesting find though.

It is not an error coin. Those were popular necklaces when I was in school the back gets ground off and a hole drilled through them. You can still find these necklaces at flea markets all over.

in not so sure its a copy. it could look that way from rolling around in the sand for years. whatever it turns out to be its a cool find.

Re: This has me Buffalo'd

the picture looks like the metal it is made from is a copper alloy, is it copper? or is it nickel?
My guess, especially if it is just a hair smaller than a nickel, would be that a person used a nickel to make a one sided mold and then melted and pressed a copper penny into it.

Just a guess, but anyone with a torch and a block of clay could do it, just the kind of thing a guy in a shop class might attempt. But that depends on if it is copper or not.

looks like an error coin filled die and blank obverse.

Thank you for all the replies.

First of all after some review I can answer some of your questions.

The back does not look ground off. In fact it looks cast.

The metal seems to be a copper alloy and the face appears cast in rather than made from a die.

After reading your post and looking at it more closely, I believe it is a cast copy to be used as jewerly or as a charm.

Thanks again for your input.
