This creeped me out a little, From an 1800's Schoolhouse site..Solved

This old one room schoolhouse site from the mid-1800's has produced several nice Indian heads the last couple times I've been there. I got skunked tonight for coins but dug this item and was a little creeped out when i saw what looks to be a skull?? I believe it is made of nickel. It has a little pin/rivet in the top and on the back side is a small ring scored in to the metal around the rivet like there may have been another piece attached to the back that swiveled on the rivet...It reads "Our Lamented" ...thanks for ANY suggestions on this one,i appreciate you havin a look,

The word lament (in Polish) means life story or someone repeating a phrase.At least thats the way I understand it.It may have said our lamented prayers? Great find ! I hope someone else has the answer...

You might be right snake35 about that being a Q..it also has what looks to be a "period" after the R which would make it QUR. Lamented

I think you guys are right on with the pocket knife idea. I compared it to a Frary pocket knife i dug at a different one room schoolhouse site this spring and the rivet is placed in the same off center position.The Frary by coincidence is an "Our Boy" knife..here's a pic...does that look like a skull?!

Jim,heres a better pic after some serious scrubbing and olive oil..I'm relieved it's NOT a skull,now i'd just like to know who this character really is

It looks like a Q, (sometimes a piece of dirt gets in the mold lettering) but maybe it just says OUR LAMENTED... (lamented meaning an expression of regret or sorrow) maybe saying PRESIDENT under his pic. Date would be shortly after his assassination in 1865. Maybe u can find the rest.

I can even see Abe's vest and bowtie.
