Found this heavy brass object this morning at a very old French site. Previous items from this site date to the late 1600s to the late 1700s. It's tough to tell from the pictures but the "leaves" are offset from the loop. Any ideas?

Re: This could be tough...heavy brass.

yep --the leaves go under the edge on the front of the wagon and bolts go thru a hole in the wagon and the leaves ---- a nut and lock washer is then attached and screwed tightly down --the eye in the front is where it "hitches" to the horse team . --- seems good to me.

Sounds reasonable...the only issue is that the leaves are rounded so they would not meet a board flush...

Looks more like a part of an old copper or brass pot, the brass item for a handle. It would have had two of them.

Good Call!!! I think you may be right. We found a metric tonne (Canada 'eh) of iron pot shards in this area! And the fact that the leaves are rounded would definitely fit that! This one is getting a green check mark! Thanks LostCauses!
