Hello T-Net!! Please Help!! I found this button last Friday night at a large farm/house site that dates back well before the Civil War. We have dug many CW artifacts from both the North and the South here especially buttons. None of my hunting buddies has seen this button before, but we are in agreement that the "Extra Quality" backmark looks a bit newer than the Civil War. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I did a quick look in Tice's book and the backmark style (double inner concentric rings and one outer ring also stars between EXTRA and Quality) and the words EXTRA QUALITY were used by Scovill's in 1860's. So perhaps it is CW era.

Thanks for the help guys. I understand Collector seeing the similarity to a band button. At first look, we, that were there digging, thought the same: some weird derivative of a musician's button.

She is a really nicely made button. As a matter of fact, the only button I have that is better made is the SC button I dug last week about 40 yards away from this one.

Maybe someone will have seen it before and let us know.

Thanks again.

Montana Jim....you are always on your game. Thanks for the ID! What is a career uniform button for a civilian? I have never heard of such a thing. I guess it is time to do some Googling.

Awesome work Montana Jim. Thanks to everyone else, too: Crusader, Don in SJ, and Collector. Hey and if anyone knows what a career uniform button for a civilian is just let us know.

OMG...something just hit me hard in the brain. The land I am hunting once belonged to a CW politician. Could this button be related to him after long service in the government. Dang!!

A career "uniform" button may be for someone who works at a hotel, and the blazer has a special button... or an airline, a fire department, a police force, or anything like that. It just means it's not military, but IS part of a uniform.
