Third time out at this 101 year old house in South Bend and what a day it was. I have hunted for 8 years and have come across a few keepers here and there. But this house on an old Indian trail held a surprise for me and a buddy of mine. Hunted most of the day and picked out a few coins. Mostly clad but a couple of wheaties and the occasional silver mercury. The oldest thing we found was a 1918 wheatie. Until we started to search closer to a small patch of woods towards the back of the property. My Whites Pro 6000 rang out loud on a quarter signal. My friends DFX for some reason or another went right past it. Maybe he just missed it with the sharpshooter coil. I dug about 4 inches down and saw the edge of what I thought was a clad quarter. I pulled it from the side of the hole and it flipped over in my hand to show me the large print of ONE CENT. I turned it over to find that it was an 1812 Large Cent. I thought how in the world did this coin get here in Indiana. Of course the usual happened, history checking on the net. South Bend was not a city until 1865. The first settler arrived in 1820. The fur trade was hot right up to that point, especially here near the St. Joseph river. Wow a coin from the time of the War of 1812. I hope to post a picture of it soon. I would grade it as good. The date is easily read as well as the ONE CENT markings. What a day! Money sure doesn't grow on trees but it sure grows in the ground! Thanks to the lady who lets me hunt her property.....jgas
