Have been finding these large, (porcelain, ceramic), rods. Think they are the makings of a battery. When I dig

them I often get a blue, white, gray material in the dirt surrounding them, think its what remains of the rest of the

battery.

I have also found the small rods, but I finally found a full set up on those batteries.

Anyone have a pic of what they look like?

all have a good un.........

you got it right, these are the carbon/clay core of a large cell carbon zinc battery (dry cell) the little ones are most likely from our familiar "D" cells, still today, under that button on the Positive side, it the top of a pencil diameter carbon rod surrounded by a acid mixture and then outwardly a zinc can. Usually the zinc can deteriorated long ago leaving the carbon rod. these are the dimensions of the LARGER than "D" size battery that your large carbon rods may be from. Before the rural electrification project, radios, and all electric devices as few as there were, had to be powered by batteries, so you find them in the dump piles sometimes glued together with pitch to make larger voltage cells by connecting the cells in series.

F cylinder L 87 mm, D 32 mm 1.5 V
G cylinder L 105 mm, D 32 mm 1.5 V
J cylinder L 150 mm, D 32 mm 1.5 V
N cylinder L 30.2 mm, D 12 mm 1.5 V
