Went out detecting tonight for about an hour. Hunted a field in Western Germany not far from my house. I found this thin coin...At least I think it's a coin. It's very thin and barely any detail left on it. I can make out the letters "MEIL" on the bottom of it, but I'm not familiar enough with European coins yet to know where to start looking. I did a search for German coins + MEIL but didn't find anything that had those letters. Can anyone help out? I would greatly appreciate it!

Appears to be a token or an advertising piece for someone named O'NEIL

Could be a button backmark... and there is a small circle where the shank might have been.

I think it's just the lighting of the photo that makes it look like a shank. It's very smooth.

I wouldn't rule out a token, but it's definitely an M before the EIL, so O'Neil wouldn't work.

Is it possible that word is "VERMEIL"?

(in which case it might be a button that was gold plated)

Gold plating is sometimes called vermeil. (although that term is usually used to refer to gold plating over silver.. which this doesn't appear to be)
