Thick, Brass Relic from Colonial Site.

This relic came from a strictly colonial to very early 19th century site. I was told it's a drawer pull but have seen no evidence to prove that. I posted this on Facebook & people have found them at colonial sites all the way up in NY (I'm in NC) Any help is appreciated

Hi,

I have seen a very similar thing once and it was identfied by some people as "old/antique grease/lubricant oil nipple" with someone else saying it is some king of tap for liquids. The round hole should in both cases hold another part to be turned to allow liquid /grease to go through.

Google picture search "drip feed oilers " to get an approximate idea

I remain a bit scetical about this since these things are handmade (yours too from the look) and a machine part should be itself machined, shouldnt it?

It is interesting to me that this relic isn't worn at the round hole like the earlier posted relic.


The wear at the hole indicates to me that something was hooked in the hole and under a lot of pressure at the hook. My first thought was it a catch for a spring - like for an old school screen door. Maybe a part of a self closing hinge?


I can see how it could be part of a drawer pull, except for the funky wear pattern on the other relic. That doesn't make sense for a drawer pull...
