At a YS I saw several of those blue Whitman beginner coin collector books. They were all marked $1 each. I casually walked over and opened every book. I found 2 that I wanted.

I told the lady that both were marked $1 each and would she take a dollar for both. She said OK I paid and dropped them off in my car and came back and asked if she had any old coins. She said NO, I don't sell my coins.

She doesn't? between those two books were 10 silver quarters!!

It pays to check inside everything when you do the hunt.

Happened to me also. YS several blue whitmans in a box. Lady sez quarter each. All empty but 1 bought it. $2.40 worth old nickels in it. No silver tho.

I have twice had sort of the exact opposite happen lately. The latest in particular. A business lady in town wanted me to come look at her father's coin collection and asked if I would buy it. I said yes and we set up a time a couple of weeks later. When I got there I was more than a bit disappointed. It was all dateless buffalo nickels, recent stuff, Canadian coins, very little silver, just a '64 Kennedy half and a '60 quarter, a few common date wheaties, that sort of thing. We looked it over together and I commented it wasn't overly valuable, but I would buy it if she wanted to set a price and I would hope to find something in it. She said she knew that it wasn't very valuable and would take $50. I agreed and since it was my day off I took the box home and immediately started pulling out the modern 1950-85 nickles, dimes and 65-85 quarters to roll and the Canadian change of the same date range and believe it or not there was over $72 dollars just in change. I didn't make a ton on the collection, but nearly tripled my investment, quite accidently. It was later when I saw her that she told me she had more, the good stuff if I wanted to come look at that. I guess she had held back the better stuff thinking I wouldn't make an offer on everything but cherry pick her if I saw it all at once. Little did she know she partially bankrolled my next buy. I realized at I wrote this that it is kind of ironic that this has happened to me since I use the moniker CladSpends2, which I chose cuz I am happy find clad when metal detecting, as it goes into my daughter's college fund and will someday spend very well too. Sorry if I hijacked your post Dan. I want to point out to any that don't know Dan well on here that he is a great guy, he again thought enough of me, though he has never actually met me, to inquire if my family and I were ok post Sandy here on the east coast. Listen to Dan, I have learned a ton from him.

Hijack?? you just added to it. you better go out and find more clad if you are saving it for kella's college fund. I just paid me daughters college book bill for this quarter $620 This is her senior year and she is taking a full load and working at the Farm Store on campus and will be showing sheep when they are old enough. (good thing the school is paying for the lambs they are not cheep sheep)

Sorry Clad didn't realize you was near sandy..

No worries, Creeper. We actually are in Maine and enough inland so Sandy had very little effect on us. I wasn't commenting on others not being nice enough, only that Dan had been nice enough to think of us even though he has never really met me. He has just taught me a bunch about buying gold and silver and has always posted good info on here to help us all and wanted to let any newbies know to listen to Dan. Just as they should Diggum and a few others. I know there are a few on here like Jersey Ben with Jersey in there monikers and hope all of them are doing well and safe and sound.

Thanks but don't worry about me. All is well here. I can also vouch for all of the forum users with "JERSEY" in their name that they are doing fine (they all live fairly close by).

I bought a Whitman type coin holder. Hidden in the back, behind the paper that advertizes the other books they sell, was a nice Franklin Half. She wanted $.25 for the book. I gave her $5 and asked if that was ok with her. She agreed and thanked me.

I recently bought a Roosevelt dime album for 15 bucks at a junk auction. It contained 27 silver dimes and 1 clad dime. Not a special score or anything but around here it is rare to get silver below spot at auctions/sales.
