There are more coins in the earth than in circulation?

I had once read that there are more coins under the dirt than there are in actual circulation. Does anyone belive this? It's very hard for me to grasp this concept, but I guess it could very well be true. What do you think? Possible?

absolutely. just Think how many years coins have been in Circulation in the U.s. alone.
500 + years worth.

these days Each year, the United States Mint makes between 14 billion and 20 billion circulating coins.

If we just count the clad years using the smaller amount
that's 686 Billion coins.


If the Majority aren't in the ground ?

I have read that 1/3 of the worlds' coins and jewelry are either under ground or under water... that I believe more than the "more than half" theory.

Think about all the coins you see laying around paved areas. Then think of those hitting dirt, turf or sand. People are just so careless with "change"!!

I read recently allot of kids, (teens) think counting out coin Change makes them look poor.
so they throw it away, and prefer to break Bills.

now if only the ones who rob Car consoles for change thought that

I imagine ever since credit card and debit cards took over there will be less and less change lost every year. Someday in the future the days of loose change will be gone. No more lost couch change to find! Haha

They know how many coins of each denomination are minted and they have an idea how many are still in circulation. X - Y = Z
