We've been fortunate to acquire some pretty nice relics so far this year. Actually we're letting a few things go too, but upgrading is always nice... Dad chased down this Thebes last Thursday. It measures 5-3/16" long and is made from a stained Burlington Chert. It was found 2 miles south of Ursa in Adams County, Illinois. This area around Adams County is well known for producing stained artifacts. The Lima Lake area was inhabited often throughout prehistory. The water would raise and lower and cover up these camps which often times stained a lot of artifacts. They often turn a deep gold or orange colored and some turn to a navy blue. The color pieces turn depends on the site, material, and other conditions. This area in the midwest has also produced some of the best early archaic pieces found anywhere. Lots of fine Hardins, Thebes, Doves, and other early archaic types are found in this area of the lower Illinois River and Mississippi River valleys.

Great looking Thebes Jeff. It looks first stage. Is there any beveling at ll on it?

Thanks Steve. It doesn't have any bevelling yet. I think it probably has one resharpening as it's starting to get a little refined edgework. It has a pretty distinct twist to the piece as many of the big points do. I believe that's because of the material they started with rather than resharpening.

Thanks for the replies everyone else also.

Very nice acquisition . Seeing that twist is always kinda interesting like they were chasing it around the stone as they worked it. Thanks for sharing it.

Sweeeeet Thebes. I used to have a place just north of Ursa and bordering the Mississippi River to hunt. The fields were absolutely covered in artifacts.

Thats a premo one thanks for showing it. Gives me hope, lol
